Increasing Your Cultural Competence
Tests have been used from the beginning of human history. For example, everyone who practices Christianity or believes in the Bible is familiar with the first test of a man. So, testing has long been a part of human culture. This week, I tested my social cognition as part of Project Implicit's effort to uncover hidden biases that can affect my perception and judgment. In this essay, I will talk about how the test made me feel overall, how I can become more culturally competent, and recognize biases against
other cultural origins. My two-categorization challenge was the "Evaluation Priming and Implicit Association test."
The results are as follows:
1)
The statistics indicate an automatic preference for the Baunif over the Nifflan in the evaluation priming task.
2)
Implicit Association Test: Suggest a neutral automatic association between Women and Me.
a)
A powerful innate kinship between males and women. In the third assignment, I had to classify claims about Type 1 and Type 2 occurrences as True or False. In contrast to Type 2, which indicates "not having a sexual attraction toward men," Type 1 refers to "having a sexual attraction toward men." The results show I have a better affinity for Type 2 than Type 1 personalities.
I must interact with and build relationships with people unlike me if I want to work and live in a society where people come from various backgrounds. Understanding cultural competency and cultural intelligence is necessary before this can occur. The capacity to manage wood in a range of cultural situations is what Windon and Lamo
(2020) define as cultural intelligence. According to Jones-Smith (2019), cultural competency is the capacity to perceive and comprehend cultural differences. When someone masters the abilities required for cultural competency, they also acquire the skills required for cultural intelligence. The quote by Mark Twain that "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-
mindedness," is well known (Levine, 2019). Deardorff offered several methods to assist with cross-cultural attitudes.
Demonstrating an exploratory mindset is one piece of advice for developing a culturally competent mindset. I intend to travel to several countries to broaden and improve my cultural competency. You can learn much from interacting with people from various cultures, faiths, and eating traditions.
Being adaptable and flexible is another way to use my cultural competency. With these two characteristics, I will be able to work with a variety of people with different views and practices.
I understand my cultural viewpoint. However, it will be possible for me to reflect on who I am and where my blind spots are by looking inward and having internal discussions about who I am. This is crucial for all counselors to offer the best possible care to everyone who enters their doors.
When ethnicity is brought up in our country, there is always opposition. However, regardless of sexual preference, adherence to a particular religion, or cultural background, anyone needing counseling should always see us as a haven. We are there to use our expertise to clarify a new situation for someone.
