Unit Seven: Writing Assignment Belhaven University EDU 622: Teaching Reading and Math Skills Dr. Garmon February 27, 2021
Reading for MUD Directions: Watch the video three times. With each viewing, record your responses and thinking in the boxes provided. M Main Ideas I gathered the main idea to be about dogs being loved by the people in their community. Also, I take it to be dogs are a man’s best friend. The dogs in the slide betray to be hard working dogs that help the men in wintery weather. I believe Balto is the hero of all the dogs. U Understanding (What does the author want me to remember about this?) I believe the author wanted me to remember the song that was being played. The words in the song says, “I’m the world greatest”. Stating that the dogs are the greatest. The author wanted to show a correlation between a man, and a heroic dog and how fidelity, endurance and intelligence plays a role with the dog. D For the final viewing I noticed the title stood out a little more than before. The words in the title pretty much tells the whole movie. The title sets the mood for the whole movie. I also noticed the setting of the movie. In the beginning of the clip, it’s appeared to be cold, gloomy, and frozen. Also, it appears to be specific skilled dogs that are leading the
Significant Details pack of dogs on the sled. The same black dog that started the video, I believe it’s the same dog that ended the video. Reflection As I looked over this strategy, I now can see the importance of the strategies taking. Before reviewing the video for three time I thought I could gather all information with the first viewing. Once viewing it over and over, I noticed something different and more important details. I now understand the re-read strategy better.

When asking the questions how, why, where, and when I gained more clarity of what the author wanted me to know. Being this type of activity helps students with comprehension, I will utilize this strategy in my classroom. This type of exercise will help students with comprehension by helping them process what they are seeing. It will also help improve their critical thinking skills. This exercise is a form of visual literacy. Visual literacy improves one's creativity, critical thinking, educational achievement, empathy towards others, and ability to decipher technology. I would incorporate more colors and words in form of a word splash for a previewing of new content. References ACRL Visual Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education.
