This article touches base on how far more Americans have died as a result of the Covid-
19 pandemic than what has been counted and reported. The study was based on Americans in the United States who were impacted from COVID 19. They get this information to new research published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. In the article they use a quote from Dr. Steven Wolf and he states that, "For every two Americans that we know of who are dying of Covid-19, another American is dying”. Dr. Steven Woolf is the author of the new research and director emeritus of the Center on Society and Health at Virginia Commonwealth University. His study revolved around how many more Americans have died from COVID 19 pandemic and what the difference was from what was reported. Woolf's study looked at death statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics, which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, as well as the Census Bureau. The study found that from March through July,
there were 225,530 "excess" deaths, a 20 percent increase over the average number of deaths expected for those months. This study would be considered an observational study
due to the fact that Wolf was just observing statistics that were already shown and just analyzing them to figure out the gaps in the numbers. 3) Describe two things you learned from reading this article.
-
One thing that I learned from reading this article is that an explanation for the gap of deaths could be people who did not have Covid-19, but died because of disruptions caused by the pandemic. I never thought of this as a possibility and didn’t think about the people who could have had chest pains and they would be too scared to call 911 because they're afraid of getting the virus. Another thing I learned was that mortality related to increases in substance abuse and decreases in access to medical care, particularly among those who lost health care coverage during the economic downturn caused by the pandemic. I knew mental health could play a huge factor in this just due to the fact that we are all supposed to be home alone and that can take a toll on one's mental health. But, I never thought about those losing health care coverage. When we are in a pandemic like this you just think everyone will be taken care of because the world wants us well but, millions of people were losing jobs which included their health care benefits. 4) Were there any issues raised about the study and/or its results?
-
There weren't issues raised about the study and or its results, just the fact that they didn’t know exactly what was causing the gaps. They just assumed many different reasons and counted those in, but there was still a gap somewhere. 5) What questions do you have about the study and/or its results? -
I think the one question I would have is what other things / circumstances could be causing this big gap in deaths reported? Could there be a mistake in the numbers at all?
