2 A podcast by Malcolm Gladwell, Episode “Way to Go, Ohio” In this episode, Malcolm Gladwell tries to analyze and compare the kind of life people lived in the past like the 1800s to the present life. He takes an example of the population or people of the Swiss Alps and their health conditions during the 1800s. In his interview with Michael Zimmerman from the University of Zurich, Zimmerman tells him that most people of the Swiss Alps had visible goiters during the 1800s. In his description of goiter, Zimmerman states that the goiter in children can be the size of a lemon but it is very large in adults, especially in women with a history of repeated pregnancies. In this episode, Malcolm is obsessed and focused on natural experiments, thought experiments, and scientific experiments. As aforementioned, the episode talks about a disfiguring and mysterious disease that was witnessed in most of the regions in the world in the 1800s. The episode illustrates that there was no person or physician who could find the cure or mitigation for the condition and disease. However, a doctor who resides in Ohio carried out an experiment that could probably lead to a cure for this disease. The major finding that this doctor came up with in his experiment is that iodine is a remedy for goiter. If iodine is administered to people, then the goiter could vanish. Below are the two questions that could go on the study sheet; 1. Was it ethical for the doctor to perform an experiment on the people? If yes/no, state why. 2. What could have been the health legal action that could have been taken against the doctor if the experiment went wrong? Reference
