1-2 Activity: Lens Exploration The topic I've chosen for my final project this semester is workforce diversity, and it holds a special significance for me as a foreigner who has worked in various countries over the past 7 years. Workforce diversity offers a multitude of advantages, including diverse perspectives, heightened creativity, improved performance across the board, increased productivity, sometimes cost-efficiency, a wealth of diverse ideas and innovative products, and often an enhancement of a company's reputation. Companies that appreciate employees from various backgrounds, including differences in culture, beliefs, religion, and sexual orientation, tend to be more appealing overall and enjoy a stronger reputation. Treating individuals who are different from oneself with equal respect fosters a more welcoming and inclusive work environment. Valuing these differences brings the workforce closer and contributes to a fair and happy corporate culture. History lens Examining the historical aspects of diversity in the workplace, I plan to delve into significant events that initiated a more diverse workforce. This includes the mobilization of women to fill job vacancies in factories during World War I in 1914 when men were drafted. Additionally, I intend to explore the Segregation Era spanning from 1900 to 1939. My research will rely on sources from The National Park Service website to explore the World War I period and the Library of Congress website to investigate the Segregation Era. Humanities lens When examining workforce diversity through a humanities perspective, my focus will be on how diverse backgrounds can significantly impact and enrich various aspects of culture. This includes arts, music, history, different viewpoints, and languages. Individuals from diverse
backgrounds often find themselves more inspired to enhance their skills and talents, while also benefiting from the knowledge and creativity of a culturally diverse and educated group of people. Natural and applied sciences lens When considering workplace diversity from the perspective of Natural and Applied Sciences, my primary emphasis will be on ensuring an entirely impartial and objective approach in the hiring process. Establishing a bias-free environment is crucial, as it enables individuals to freely express their unique personalities and showcase their cultural backgrounds. Social science lens Examining diversity in the workplace from a Social Science perspective, my primary focus will be on understanding the dynamics of social relations among individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and varying sexual orientations. The ultimate goal is to ensure that everyone is treated with equality and fairness.
