Literature : The 21st Century Connections – 21st Literature The 21st Century, the time period that we all live in today, smothered in continuous social, economic and political issues. An interesting era for films of this genre is the late 1930's to early 1940's which we see reflections in the literature today. War World 2 was a turning point in history and was a time of sheer horror in many places such as Spain, Germany, Poland and Eastern Europe. In today's age, contemporary literature writers often draw their inspiration and ideas from the writers that have gone before them. As a result, many works of 21st literature face the events and movements from the past in order for them to make sense of the present. The two connections that are very apparent in all four of my texts are power and control and the theme of hope. The way that each of these connections have been linked throughout the late 1930's time period based texts show how important they are into understanding what is still happening in the 21st century . The texts that I have chosen to study are "The Book Thief", "Pan's Labyrinth", "The Pianist" and "Defiance". The reason I have chosen to study these are to shed light onto why 21st century literature quite often seem to take ideas from the past to help make sense for the future as "you have to know the past to understand the present." As stated by James Meade "In the 1930's one was aware of two great evils – mass unemployment and the threat of war." The late 1930's was a time of war, a Get more content on StudyHub.Vip
Themes Of Love And Freedom In World Literature Love and freedom! Where do Love and Freedom show up in the same place? They come together as themes in World Literature. World Literature is the diverse variety of genres in books that have been spread worldwide and have become well known. It is important to know about these two themes to share and understand everyone's unique perspectives. The large collection of striking viewpoints creates many diverse and intriguing themes. Two of the biggest themes that can be found in books are Love and Freedom. The theme Love, has many different variations such as fake love, necessary love, lost love, and etc. Love is generally described as a feeling of affection towards someone or something. This can differ from book to book. Freedom is another ...show more content... The theme of Love fits into World Literature because of how it is shown throughout all different types of books. Another theme that is in World Literature is Freedom. This theme comes up in both "Night" and "A Doll's House" in different ways. In "Night", Eliezer is rescued from the malicious Germans by American forces. This is called literal freedom, because Eliezer is freed from the main struggle physically, but will never be able to recover/escape mentally. In the book, "A Doll's House", Nora is released from her "fake" marriage with Torvald since she is no longer treated like she is under him, let alone feel like she is trapped in a relationship with him. This is called emotional freedom, because she was originally trapped in the state of mind that she was only a household wife, until she was, finally, able to be free of that mind set. Each book helps depict how the theme, Freedom, fits into World Literature, even though many diverse books have the theme in a different way. "Old Yeller" by Fred Gibson shows the themes of Love and Freedom. Each book is different than one another, whether it is distinct, from the rest of the books, by storyline, genre, details, etc. Yet, in each book, Freedom and Love both come up. In "Old Yeller" the theme of Love is shown by how Travis, the protagonist, and Old Yeller care for and watch over each other. Love can be seen when Travis suspects that Old Yeller has rabies and has to kill his loyal Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Theme in Literature Essay Mr. Judd Name__________________ CH. 14 America and World War II Study Guide It was the bloodiest, deadliest war the world had ever seen. More than 38 million people died, many of them innocent civilians. It also was the most destructive war in history. Fighting raged in many parts of the world. More than 50 nations took part in the war, which changed the world forever. For Americans, World War II had a clear–cut purpose. People knew why they were fighting: to defeat tyranny. Most of Europe had been conquered by Nazi Germany, which was under the iron grip of dictator Adolf Hitler. The war in Europe began with Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939. This included propaganda messages in posters, radio, and film. Propaganda is a message put out by a government or organization to promote a policy, idea, or cause. During World War II , the U.S. government wanted the public to wholeheartedly support the war efforts. They also wanted to maintain a good public morale and a public commitment for the war. Persuading the American public became a wartime industry. The government launched an aggressive propaganda campaign to galvanize public support for the war or to encourage particular actions. The basic message was simpl e–we're on the side of good, the enemy is the side of evil. These images and messages were designed to tug at human emotions. The Meaning Of World Literature World literature is not exactly something that can be defined in one sentence. It has been given multiple meanings by many different authors and people throughout the years. A very brief way to describe the meaning of world literature is literature that circulates elsewhere around the world rather than in its own origin or hometown. Some common examples of world literature are Moby Dick by Herman Melville, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe , and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. World literature is important for today's students to read for a glimpse into the lifestyle of the author's portion and perspective of the world and to create realistic and factual mindsets of different parts of the world. Students in today's world should be exposed to world literature for a peek into the life and perspective surrounding area that the author or character is being exposed to. "When reading about civil war, the ability to share the fears and victories of the battlefield firsthand through a character's experiences there helps students to understand the internal and external conflicts he/she faces. When these experiences transcend time and geography to illustrate similar uncertainties, students see and experience these situations as if firsthand" (Breitman). Students who read world literature get a personal insight into the thought process of the author or main character who may be going through some tough times or is experiencing events or traditions that only occur in his/her Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

World Literature And Composition B1 Henry Schineller Howe World Literature and Composition B1 5 October, 2016 Clutch Push in the clutch in, ease off the gas, shift gears, let the clutch out, foot back on the gas. To one, the task of driving a car with a manual transmission appears easy on paper. Anyone who has gone through the arduous process of learning this skill will state the contrary. This act , which seems to be a simple task of mindless movements of muscle memory, truly is a feat of deftness and finesse. If you place a new driver behind the wheel, this already difficult task seems impossible and daunting. For my seventeenth birthday, I got the one gift that I had desired for as ever since I could say the word "car". Not only did I get just a car, I had gotten the automobile I had always lusted after. In my driveway, a dark grey metallic Subaru WRX stood before me. Single turbo four cylinder boxer engine, symmetrical all wheel drive, quad exhaust, it truly was the perfect gateway into the vast world of high performance cars for a young enthusiast. I could not have been happier. The irony was that I could not drive it yet . The car had a six speed manual gearbox and I had barely mastered operating an automatic. I assumed that with all of the Forza and Need For Speed I had played, hours of videos I had watched, and my general knowledge of the mechanics of a car that this skill would come to me naturally. I was sorely mistaken. It was cool fall morning and we had taken my car to one of my baseball Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Literature : The Importance Of Literature Turning the Pages of Life; the Importance of Literature Multiple people believe that literature is sought to be the study of written text. Although this is true, literature has many different parts to it and is an expression of creative thoughts and freedoms that allow you to have limitless boundaries. The way that authors translate their thoughts and feelings into novels, plays and poems allows one to feel the power of their emotions. In addition, literature has the power to teach one the value of knowledge by being able to view the insights of others, as well as allowing one to gain a new perspective. Literature should have an increased importance in society, due to the fact that it is a source to connect people through the insight of others and helps one remain human by the empathy that is created through such connections. Literature is one of the single most important aspects of one's life as it enables one to read, write and communicate with individuals around them. To me, literature is a way of expressing your thoughts, views and opinions not only through spoken words but through poems, plays and novels. It gives one the ability to appreciate the emotional power a novel illustrates. In the text "The Value of Literature" by Michael Meyer's it states that, "one of the most important values of literature is that it nourishes our emotional lives" (4). Personally, literature allows me to feel connections with the thoughts and feelings of the novels characters. When Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

World Literature Class Analysis My overall experience within the World Literature class was rather lackluster if I may say so. The content that was shown within the class I found rather boring and did not have much reason to teaching it. Although three sections that I had found interesting which was Beowulf, Asian Literature and our independent novel study. They both held values and moral standards that were in place to teach the reader. These were interesting and compiled. For the instance of all the other stories or literature that we examined in class it was boring and did not do much for me. Although I only skimmed those ones I could see that they seemed to be dragged out and tedious to read. As for trips the took they were well planned and gave the class something to watch which is expansive in the realm of forms of study. Although some of the text that provided the most of a learning experience was "The Analects" written by Confucius where he said At fifteen I set my heart upon learning. At thirty, I planted my feet firm upon the ground. At forty, I no longer suffered from perplexities. At fifty, I knew what were the biddings of Heaven. At sixty, I heard them with docile ear. The Norton Anthology World Literary Analysis As I am siting and read thing the passages from our reading book The Norton Anthology World Literature I'm a little taken back. As a child who was raised reading the Bible at church I have learned that I never took the time to really see what it was telling me. I see in reading passage of section in of Hebrew's Genesis 6–9 where the words say " and to the woman, "Though God said, you shall not eat from any tree in the garden" (96). This is where the woman is talking to the serpent and she is telling him that God told her not to eat from the tree that is in the middle of the garden. Wwi Essay : World Literature Dixin Ding Ms. Solder World Literature Period 4 12 February 2017 WWI Synthesis Essay "Love is like war...easy to start, difficult to end, and impossible to forget" (Unknown). With a half century of peace among nations, people were deemed unfit to comprehend the devastating reality behind war. With recent campaigns being brief and victorious, individuals believed this war would be nothing short of the same. Hence, the buzz surrounding the beginning of the war was undeniable, from the young recruits overjoyed, to the participation in parades, and all citizens young or old sharing mutual exhilaration (Zweig). Hence, with youth blindly following patriotism without giving war a thought, combined with new advancements in the technological field, the damage and agony approaching was inevitable. With the invention of new technology, mankind was forced to approach war in a different perspective, opening the floodgates for the horror to come. Over the years, technology has improved the quality of life for many, but at the same time, has interfered with one's privacy and safety. With the invention of the automatic machine gun, soldiers were forced to abandon the "gentlemanly" strategy of forming a neat line and firing at the enemy based on the commander's word (Barron). With soldiers utilizing technological advancements during World War I effectively, men were killed rapidly and efficiently in a dispassionate manner by their enemy. Thus, soldiers were forced to lead with instincts rather than feelings in order to survive on the battlefield. Not to mention, with the shift in tactics for fighting the war due to inventions such as poisonous gas, bombs, and tanks, the severity of war was intensified leading to soldiers acting like " [beasts to] defend [themselves] against annihilation" (Barron, Remarque 113). Trench warfare meant that "no one was winning" and the effects of the new technology Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

World Literature Essay World Literature Essay A young boy who tries to survive the Holocaust, a king who sleeps with his mother and kills his father, and a brave man who is unable to reveal his love for a women, these are the stories that three different books tell, written by authors coming from all over Europe. These works of literature namely are "Night", "Oedipus the King" and "Cyrano de Bergerac". All three of these stories appear to be rather dissimilar since they are written and take place during time periods which lie thousands of years apart. "Oedipus the King" is a legendary story which takes place hundreds before the birth of Christ and contrasting to this play are "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "Night" which in comparison to Oedipus are new, since they ...show more content... Now both are able to express their love towards Roxane, nonetheless, Christian is the one who profits the most from this relationship at first since he is the one who gets to be together with Roxane because she thinks that Christian is the only part of the "romantic hero". However, when Roxane tells Christian: "First loving your beauty±then your body and soul were inseparate±now, I love your inner self above all else", Christian sees that she now actually loves Cyrano and therefore his fears of not being loved return. Love is the second theme that is present through out all three books, therefore also in "Night". In this memoir the relationship between father and son plays a big role since they are the only members of the family that are still alive and together. Therefore, the bond between the two is tight. In "Cyrano de Bergerac" love is the major theme of the entire play since two of the main characters are fighting for the love of Roxane. Cyrano, a distant cousin of Roxane, is one of them, however, he is disfigured by a gigantic nose, but nonetheless he is a brilliant poet. His rival for Roxane's love is Christian, a handsome noble man, who is not as eloquent as Cyrano and has trouble talking to women. World Literature Essay Number Two: World Literature Essay Number Two: The symbolism of Blood and Water in the play "Blood Wedding" The two word title of the play "Blood Wedding" by Frederico Garcia Lorca presents both a contradiction and a concurrence. These themes continue throughout the play, and the two words of the title are used to capture the essence of the contrasting movements of its action. The wedding symbolises the harmony of man and woman, and the continuation of life. Blood too symbolises these things, however it also evokes contrasting feelings of violence, death and destruction. Blood represents the strength of the blood ties in families, and promotes the sense of repeating history which is evident throughout the play, as well as fertility and ...show more content... She is very interested to know what the girl's mother is like, and we learn from the neighbour that "she was very proud"[2], and that "she never loved her husband"[3]. This knowledge gives the audience a sense of foreboding for the repetition of past events. We know that the mother's interest in the bride's mother stems from her belief that this blood relationship will show her what the girl is like. If we accept this point of view, we believe that history may repeat itself, and with the bridegroom already linked by his blood to murder and killing doom seems inevitable. Even the wife of Leonardo is a victim of the repetition of family history. Before Leonardo runs away with the bride, the wife suspects that he will not remain faithful, and referring to his lack of loyalty to her she says "it happened to my mother, now it is happening to me"[4]. So there are four characters in the play who are afflicted by the history of their ancestors. The bride's mother never loved her husband, the bridegroom's father and older brother were both murdered by members of the Felix family, Leonardo's ancestors murdered members of the bridegroom's family, and the mother of Leonardo's wife was also deserted by her husband. All of these links clearly show the importance of the blood line and the blood relationship in families which is a constant theme throughout the play, while also creating a strong sense of the inevitability of Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Finally, in his later years, he comes to understand that Heaven brings the process to an end and he makes peace with that recognition. Further along in the anthology, Catullus' Lyrics shares an entire cycle of a romantic involvement that ends badly, the same type of relationship universally witnessed first– hand or through acquaintances. Literature, Literacy, and Language Acquisition all play a major role not only specifically for learning but also in society. The definition of literacy in the past focused only on the ability to read and write print text, but the definition of literacy is no longer static. It is evolving to reflect society and technology making literacy a vital component in any environment. Literacy in the modern world is the ability to read, write, design, speak, listen and view in a way that allows you to communicate successfully. Nevertheless, literacy is the ability to read and write. To build a relationship with literacy in both children and adults we need to have a clear grasp of how we learnt to speak or how we knew what to say, and, when to say ...show more content... Literature does not just stop at reading a book. Here in Australia, the National Curriculum insures children will learn from literature from spoken, written and oral texts including Aboriginal stories, picture books, various types of print and digital texts, simple chapter books, rhyming verse, poetry, non–fiction, film, multimodal texts and dramatic performances (www.australiancurriculum.edu.au). Literature is an important part of teaching children to read and comprehending language in many forms. Keeping children engaged and learning from different forms of literature is essential for education and society. Society is built on Literature. We like to read others' stories, share and learn from their experience and this is the same for children too. Children reacts to literature in a living way, an inspiring story creates a great influence for the child where as one of questions ignites their curiosity and drives their need for information further. Literature therefore is forever building knowledge and inspiration no matter what your age is. What Is Literature Essay Charmine J. Cramales BS Math II Lit 3 10:30 – 12:00 What is Literature? Poems, novels, and stories; these are some of the things that first came to my mind upon pondering on the question 'What is Literature?'. And just lately I have known that literature also includes songs, speeches, plays, and many others in written and spoken forms. I have also known that things that are produced out of creative imagination can be referred as literary works which are the ones that comprise literature. Considering this description of what literature is, the coverage of literature seems very puzzling. If literary works are those produced out of creative imagining, then it would directly point to fictional works. But then, there are also ...show more content... Take for example the views of two individuals coming from different places on a novel based on the culture of one. It would likely be the same if their culture and beliefs are quiet related but if not, then they would surely have different understandings on certain parts of that novel. Hence, defining literature as those considered by people as 'literature' is questionable. Eagleton also associated literature as any kind of works which are valued highly by people. But then again, since people may have different perceptions on things, one may value highly a certain work while another person may consider it just as a plain writing. As stated by Ms. Pinzon, a literature professor, a personal letter can be an example of this. The recipient of the letter can be expected to really value the letter while her classmate may not. Hence, this can't define literature as a whole. Then, what really is literature? Many great critics have tried formulating a fixed definition of literature but have failed to do so. In the rise of every possible definition of what literature is, counter arguments also rise. Literature, though it seems impossible to enumerate everything it covers, play an important role in every individual's life. One can influence using literature or be influenced by it. Examples of these are the novels made by our very own national hero, Jose Rizal – the Noli Me Tangeri and El Filibusterismo. During his time, Rizal has Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

The Function Of World Literature "Function of World Literature" In this essay the intent is to convey the function of world literature, more importantly the function of literature period. How does literature from every part of the world impact every level of education in the United States? For that matter "pre–education". If you asked the question; "What is Literature or World Literature and its function? What answer would expect to get, or think a person would say? When initially developing the thought process for this essay, the focus was on literature that was not "American" and on things such as the classics. It was an inside the box thought process. To truly understand from pre–education through the basic levels of education; should the title "Function of World Literature" be used? One could suppose, argue, debate, that "Importance" is a better fit. When studying, or researching something, start with a definition. One definition of literature is. "Literature is a term used to describe written and sometimes spoken material. Derived from the Latin litteratura meaning "writing formed with letters," literature most commonly refers to works of the creative imagination, including poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, journalism, and in some instances, song."
