Analytical Essay On The Crucible
The Crucible Analytical Essay In 'The Crucible' by Arthur Miller, there are many lessons that can be
learned by analyzing the conflicts in the story. They show just how quickly fear may change people.
One particular example leads to an underlying theme in the story. In order to develop the theme of
there being no good outcome for those who condemn others, Arthur Miller created the conflict
between the Proctors and Abigail Williams in his play, The Crucible. The author puts much detail
into how this is played out. The conflict between the Proctors and Abigail is a prime example of
negative consequences that stem from a situation. It came to be when John Proctor had an affair
with Abigail despite being married to Elizabeth Proctor. It is shown the Abigail has resentment
towards Elizabeth when she mentions how "Goody Proctor is a gossiping liar" and tries to sully her
name. (Miller 26) It is evident at this point in the story that Abigail does truly condemn Elizabeth
Proctor. This will backfire on Abigail soon enough.

It is clear that Abigail has reduced her perception of Elizabeth to nothing more than "a cold,
sniveling woman" and looks down upon her. (Miller 33) It is clear at this point that the conflict
between them is growing and despite Abigail's attitude towards Elizabeth, she has gained nothing
from it so far. Despite having no return, she continues to act this way towards John's wife. It is clear
that Abigail sees no risk in doing this and is unaware of the possible ways that this could get out of

The Crucible is a complex and intriguing novel with events, characters and themes comparable to
almost every period of human history. It is common for humans to fear change and what is
unknown, in the play The Crucible this is witchcraft and the devil, in more recent times it can be
seen in post World War Two and Cold War United States, through McCarthyism. The themes in the
crucible are as important to people in the 21st century as in Salem in 1692. These include justice,
reputation, hysteria, intolerance and empowerment. All of these are common themes throughout
human history. The characters in The Crucible are also important to people of the 21st century as
they can teach us a little bit about people around us and their reactions when

Reputation shines as a theme in the play. Through reputation comes discrimination and in the
crucible almost all the witches are judged on reputation and this is important in today's world
especially with things such as racism. Another critical theme in The Crucible is the role that hysteria
can play in tearing apart a community. Hysteria messes with logic and enables people to believe that
their neighbors, whom they have always considered upstanding people, are committing unbelievable
crimes. Intolerance is key in the crucible. Because Salem is a theocratic society, moral and state
laws are the same and therefore there is no room for error and intolerance becomes current.
Danforth shows this when in Act III he says "a person is either with this court or he must be counted
against it." Empowerment is central in modern day society and appears in The Crucible many times.
The play shows how power corrupts and how certain characters use there power in association with
fear, to get there way. The characters in Arthur millers The Crucible can teach a lot about people.
People can be horrible and terribly deceptive. When placed under pressures and after experiencing
trauma peoples real character can come out. In the case of The Crucible Abigail is shown for what
she really is. She gets a kind of power and this corrupts her to use the situation to have Elizabeth
Proctor sent to jail. Abigail is not the only one who takes advantage of the

Crucible Essay
The Crucible Essay The Crucible was a very emotional book in terms of plot. The plot was about a
girl named Abigail who accuses many people of witchcraft. She also accuses Elizabeth Proctor, wife
of John Proctor. Abigail uses her power of the court to get to her obsession, John Proctor, by trying
to eliminate Elizabeth. She is unsuccessful in getting this done and ends up executing over twelve
people including John Proctor
. It is great to see all the different kinds of characterization and
themes. This story really gets you thinking about many things, such as, lying and telling the truth, or
most importantly, standing up for your beliefs even if you have to die for them. It also shows how
envy, greed, hate, and jealousy can impact

Another quote I would like to use to support John's bravery is, "She looked to dance with me on my
wife's grave. God help me, I lusted!" The reason I chose this out of the rest was because it shows
how far John will go, even if it means to soil his reputation, just to get Abigail out of control.
"Because it is my NAME! Because I may not have another in my life!" This is when John is
completely forgiven for all his sins. He has gone through so much that he feels he should at least
keep his name. He realizes that if he signs this confession given to him to be posted on the church
door, he would never be able to get his life back. After his decision to go on with the truth, you
finally see how brave he must be for not lying to the court. After reading this book, I learned that
sometimes you have to do what is right no matter how bad the consequence may be. For instance,
when John Proctor hesitates to stand up to the court about Abigail Williams lying under oath, he
learns that if he would have went earlier, things wouldn't have been as bad as they were. But the
thing that I have probably learned the most from this book is hiding the truth. This is a big time
issue that haunted John and Elizabeth Proctor as well as Abigail Williams. John and Elizabeth learn
this from the

Lessons Learned From The Crucible
The Crucible teaches us any lessons that we will encounter somewhere in our lives. It teaches us that
people are scared of other people being different than them. It also teaches is that when it comes to
people obtaining what they want their morals won't matter at all. These lessons are shown
throughout the story, our history, and our everyday lives.
This story shows us in many different ways of how people are scared of other being different. It
shows us this when in Act 1 reverend Hale asked Abigail; "Abigail, it may be your cousin is dying.
Did you call the Devil last night?" to which Abigail responded "I never called him! Tituba, Tituba..."
Here we can easily see how Abigail blamed the witchcraft issue that she was being accused of on
Tituba.

The Crucible Theme Essay
One of the many works written and driven by Puritan influence, The Crucible by Arthur Miller has
continued to influence life and thinkings. Its story tracing the 1692 Salem Witch Trials has been
widely read, received and understood, along with influencing the reader and their ideals. The play
has manifested into more than words on a page and has become of the greatest influences, even sixty
years after its publication. Though its story has not changed and is merely a retelling of the original
itself, its themes have greatly impacted its universal and enduring state.
The first theme that helped create The Crucible's universal state was intolerance. Intolerance began,
within history, years before the Salem Witch Trials and years before the creation of the New
England Colonies. Puritan beliefs were outcasted by the King and its government, causing their
migration to the new territory of what would become the United States
. This created the Puritan
colonies and the city of Salem. With their migration based on the want of religious freedom, a
theocratic society was created. Every member of the society was expected to worship and believe in
God and those that opposed the court, the men that decided God's will, also opposed God himself.
During Act Three, Proctor is accused of trying to overthrow the court, thus having his intentions to
overthrow God. Danforth states that "these trials...[are] the voice[s] of

The history of religious and government intolerance creates a bridge between the 1692 witch trials
and present society, including the impending McCarthyism of the 1950s. Hysteria continues to cause
riots and uprisings within the world and reputation is still held to a high level of respect. Without
these main themes, The Crucible would not be a piece of work that is still prevalent within society
and continues to teach

Textual Analysis Of The Crucible
Textual Analysis The Crucible The text which I have chosen to analyse is from the play The
Crucible by Arthur Miller, just looking at Act One of this play. In Act One the scene opens in
Reverend Parris's house, in the year of 1692; the scene focuses on Betty being 'ill' in bed and 'laying
limp', showing the powerful forces, they believe to be witchcraft has overcome her. This extract
highlights the importance of the themes that are throughout the play and the ideas of townspeople's
lives in Salem, in which the characters portray. This play is set in a theocratic society, where the
church and the state are one, and where the religion is strict and shapes their beliefs. Within this Act
the narrator describes Salem town as having a strict Puritan way of life with an outlook on the rest
of the world as one of "parochial snobbery". One of the most important themes to look at in The
Crucible is hysteria. The hysteria is tearing the Salem community apart, it creates people's fear of
their neighbours and they believe that friends and even family are committing unbelievable crimes
of witchcraft and communicating with the devil. To highlight the theme of hysteria we can see how
Tituba is [terrified] and [falls to her knees]; in which she is full of hysteria when questioned by Hale
by breaking down and confesses to being a witch, though earlier denying practicing witchcraft.
Hysteria rises as everyone begins to blame each other, and with Abigail shouting accusations at
Tituba that

The Crucible
The Crucible Many different parts form together to make up the society we see in The Crucible,
written by Arthur Miller. Whether it be religion, government, or social roles; they all play some sort
of impacting part to the characters we met while watching The Crucible. Who knew that religion
and government could change a person's life in a matter of minutes like it did so many times
throughout the movie. The characters like Abigail Williams and John Proctor both knew the risks of
going against these roles and what it would do to their everyday lives, but both characters chose to
do it in more ways than one. Religion played a huge role throughout The Crucible and all of the
characters were expected to show some sort of respect
...show more content...
As a viewer you can tell that religion and politics are very similar in that time period and that they
go hand in hand because of how similar they really are. Social roles also played a huge factor into
the lives of many within the society from The Crucible. People had roles that they knew they could
not disobey because these roles played such an influence within their lives. Abigail Williams, for
example, was helping the Proctor family out around the house when Goody Proctor had suspicions
of adultery between Abigail and her husband. Once these suspicions became a reality Abigail was let
go from helping their family. A viewer can tell that once a person disobeyed their social role they
were considered as an "outcast". Another way I noticed social roles playing a part within The
Crucible's society was when John Proctor was about to sign his name off to be free with his wife but
ended up ripping the paper into shreds because he could not bring himself to ruin his name. John
said "because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life" shows how important having
a good reputation towards a person's name really is. In those days, a peb rson's name was all that
had. If that person tarnished their name that was it, there was nothing left to be worthy for. Both
John Proctor and Abigail Williams knew this and that is why John ripped that paper to shreds and
why when Abigail was asked why she no longer worked for the Proctor's she did

Summary Of ' The Crucible ' Essay
Ms. Elliott AP Language and Composition 22 May 2016 Miller, Arthur. The Crucible. New York: A.
Meyerson, 1953. Print. The Crucible, a play, by American playwright Arthur Miller, is set in the
small New England town of Salem Massachusetts in 1992. The play opens with Reverend Parris
praying beside his daughter Betty Parris 's bed. In the bed Betty lies in some sort of paralyzed state.
The town 's doctor, Doctor Griggs, does not know of a medicine to cure Betty's symptoms and
advises Reverend Parris to consider unnatural causes. It becomes rumored among the townspeople
of Salem that Betty has fallen victim to witchcraft, because of this Parris requests that Reverend
John Hale of Beverly, an expert on witchcraft, examines Betty to confirm the rumor that she is
bewitched. In the night prior to Betty's condition Parris stumbled upon his niece, Abigail Williams
and Betty, with a group of girls dancing in the forest. Tituba, Parris's slave, was seen with casting
spells over a fire with the girls. Parris accuses Abigail of conjuring spirits and engaging in
witchcraft. Abigail denies these claims of witchcraft but admits they did dance in the forest.
However, Parris is speculative of Abigail's credibility due to her previous employment with
Elizabeth Proctor. Parris leaves the Parlor to lead the townspeople in a prayer at the church. The
girls who danced the night before gather in the parlor just as Betty wakes up from her paralytic state.
Abigail informs the girls of what she

Persuasive Essay On The Crucible
All eyes on them, some even with tears, and the three thick ropes with a noose on each end. They
dangle there waiting... This was happening now, it was really happening. His heart was beating out
of his chest and his palms were sweating, as he stepped up, step by step until death itself was
palpable. As he looked out into the crowd, he felt the rope being placed around his neck, then as the
rough rope got tighter he could feel the relief of his sins. He knew he was doing right by god, he was
ready. As they said their prayer in unison, one by one the floor beneath them all was swept away and
all that was left was the three bodies hanging silently.
In the play, Arthur Miller wrote called, The Crucible John Proctor says "Because it is my name!
Because I cannot have another in my life! How may I live without my name? I have given you my
soul; leave me my name!" (Miller 143). He had a very strong belief that if his name was blackened
there is no reason to live. John Proctor also chose to die because he could not double cross his
friends, the fact that he has three children, John could not raise his children to walk like men in the
world if he himself was not a true man. Therefore, for the sake of his name, reputation, and his kids
John's decision to die was a heroic one.
To begin, family life and friendship was very important to John Proctor, husband, and father of
three. If he lived then he could not possibly raise his kids to be men in the world if he himself was a
fraud of a man. He wanted to teach them that they should stand up for what they believe in and not
give into pressure by others in life. By dying, he taught his kids that not only was he a honorable
man, but he also was a good example of standing your ground and doing the right thing. John
Proctor is not a man known to go to church often, but he must of remembered this quote from the
bible: "No one has love greater than this that someone should surrender his soul in behalf of his
friends"(John 15:13). This quote means that someone who surrenders his or her soul for their friends
has lots of love, and by dying and standing up for what he believed in he taught his kids a valuable
lesson.
On the other hand, someone may say John's decision to die was

The Crucible Reputation Essay
The Crucible (Reputations in the play of The Crucible) "It takes twenty years to build a reputation
and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently" (Warren Buffett).
Arthur Miller was a well known American playwright, essayist and a very important figure in the
American theater. Arthur wrote some very important plays throughout his life and The Crucible was
one of them. The Crucible is a very well written play about the Salem Witch Trials and how the
people chose their own reputation rather than telling the truth and having a consequence for it.
Having a good reputation in a small town like Salem is very crucial. This is evident throughout the
acts in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller. John Proctor,

John Proctor's reputation is quite tarnished. Abigail Williams struggles to show that she has a good
reputation throughout The Crucible. On Pg 111, Danforth asks Abigail did you ever have a sexual
relationship with John Proctor? "If I must answer that, I will leave and I will not come back again"
(pg 111 Abigail). Everybody in Salem is starting to find out about Abigail and John, but when she is
asked if it is true, she lies. It tarnishes her reputation because she is seen as a whore now. She doesn't
want her name to be blackened in Salem. Once you have had sexual relationships with someone and
your not married, it will be hard for Abigail to find someone else to love her because she has already
been with someone else, so who would want to be with her? " Now look you. All of you. We
danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam's dead sister's. And that is all. And do not speak of the
other things" (pg 20 Abigail). Abigail and the other girls, were dancing in the woods, getting naked
and making charms. The girls knew it was wrong but they blamed it on witchcraft rather than taking
a punishment for it. This destroyed Abigail's reputation because she did not tell the full truth on what
happened in the forest, but instead, she blamed it on witchcraft. She also threatened the other girls to
go along with her to not make her look bad. Abigail does not take ownership of her downfalls and
like to place the blame elsewhere. Reverend Parris also struggles to keep his

Essay On The Crucible
The Crucible Essay Rough Draft A crucible is a container which is heated to separate impurities
mainly from metals and sometimes other substances. Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, takes place
in a quiet Massachusetts town known as Salem. Rumors of witchcraft, however have unfortunately
left the townspeople susceptible to blame one another. A quiet town virtually turned in a mad haven
for blame, revenge, and dark satisfaction overnight. The reader witnesses all of these events unfold
as they delve into the story of The Crucible and reveal how revenge reveals the motives of many
characters. The story of The Crucible takes place in Puritan Massachusetts during the colonial times.
It starts off with Abigail Williams and her friends

Hale requires everyone who is accused of being a witch to go to court and agree that they are
witches in order to prevent being hanged. If they admit that they aren't a witch they would be
hanged immediately. Hale seems to be very involved with the accusations, questioning those that are
accused everything they know about god and the church (asking Hale to recite the 10
commandments, questioning the victims' attendance in church, baptism, and things he sees as
strange). When Hale goes to John Proctor's house we witness the interrogation process: "I thought,
sir, to put some questions as to the Christian character of this house, if you'll permit me...I note that
you are rarely in the church on Sabbath day...how comes it that only two [boys] are baptized"
(2.621–671)? Later on in the play, when Proctor is testifying in court, they mystery starts to unravel
inside of Hale's head. At the end of Proctor's trial, he yells that he no longer supports what is going
on after Judge Danforth is unwilling to listen to Proctor's testimony that the whole thing is pretense:
"I denounce these proceedings, I quit this court" (3.1499–1500)! He is ashamed that everything he
has been trying to find was false and made up by Abigail. We see that in the jail scene he is begging
Goody Proctor to have her husband confess in order to save his life: "Will you plead for his
confession or will you not" (4.486–487)? This dynamic character change truly captures how Hale
has changed since the

Thesis Statement Of The Crucible
Thesis: In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, Thomas Putnam, Deputy Governor Danforth, And Abigail
Williams are most to blame for the catastrophic events encircling the Salem Witch trials.
Topic/claim sentence: Mr. Putnam is partially to blame for the Salem chaos by constantly jumping to
conclusions and prosecuting those in conflict with himself. Example 1: "He was a man with many
grievances [...] So it is not surprising to find that so many accusations against people are in the
handwriting of Thomas Putnam" (Miller 14–15). Explanation 1: Putnam has a history of holding
grudges against people and obtaining his revenge by accusing them of witchcraft. He is even
accused of these crimes but denies their truth. Example 2: "This man is killing his

I have until this moment not the slightest reason to suspect that the children may be deceiving me.
Do you understand my meaning?" (Miller 91) Explanation 1: Danforth comes into the trials with the
mindset that the victims are telling the whole truth. He even said that witchcraft is an invisible crime
and the only witnesses are the witch and her victim; "Therefore, [he] must rely upon her victims–
and they do testify" (Miller 100). By thinking this way, Danforth diminishes any chance at anyone
denying that what the children are saying is true. The persecution of innocent women is inevitable
because Danforth holds all of the power and he is choosing to put his trust in people who are
deceitful and selfish. Example 2: "Danforth, himself engaged and entered by Abigail: 'Mary Warren,
do you witch her? I say to you, do you send your spirit out?' " (Miller 109). Explanation 2: Danforth
allows himself to be so easily persuaded and tricked by Abigail and the other children. He lets his
guard down when listening to Abigail because he believes her to be trustworthy: "Danforth,
weakening: 'Child, I do not mistrust you–' " (Miller 108). Part of this trust comes from Abigail
having tricked the town into believing that she has been saved and it is her duty to point out the
Devil's people, but as a judge, it is Danforth's duty to be impartial in the

The Crucible Character Analysis Essay
The Crucible Character Analysis In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor, the protagonist, is
a farmer in his middle thirties. The author gives little to no detailed physical description of him, but
from Proctor's speech, we can still picture him as a strong and powerful man who is able to keep
every situation under the control, the kind of personality which earns him deep respect and even fear
from the people in town. On the other hand, Abigail Williams, the antagonist, plays an inferior role
as an orphan who has no social status in a place like Salem. Over the course of the play, John
Proctor is absolutely awakened and transformed by Abigail Williams. In the end, he overcomes the
crucible by releasing himself from his guilt of

This is later confirmed when she threatens to "come to [them] in the black of some terrible night and
... bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder" (Pg.175) Mary Warren and Betty Parris if they dare to
tell the truth. This shows her determination at killing Elizabeth Proctor and securing her own
reputation. Unlike many naive villains in other literatures, Abigail sets out a meticulous scheme to
frame Elizabeth. First, she witnesses Mary Warren leaving a needle in a doll. Then she "[sticks] two
inches [of a needle] in the flesh of her belly"(pg. 203) to frame Elizabeth of performing witchcraft.
So mendacious is Abigail that she is willing to injure herself to accomplish her plan. Under her
beautiful appearance also lays a manipulative heart. She is capable of manipulating not only the girls
into doing things her way, but also the members of the court to her advantage. When questioned by
Danforth whether the spirits she has seen are illusion, Abigail steps it up a notch by making the
members of the court feel sorry for her and madly refutes, "I have been near to murdered every day
because I done my duty pointing out the Devil's people–and this is my reward? To be mistrusted,
denied, questioned like a–" (Pg.210) This, following by Elizabeth's failure to tell the truth and the
girl's verisimilar acting toward the "yellow bird", further demonstrates her manipulative power
which brings the court in her favor. Altogether, many

Analysis Essay On The Crucible
Jason Garcia Mrs. McGill English III 3 November 2017 Crucible Final Essay Since The Crucible
was written during the time of McCarthyism, the whole play is pretty much a metaphor for it. In The
Crucible, people claim that there are witches and that they are possessed by the Devil. In
McCarthyism, random people were accused of being communists. If you didn't like someone all you
had to do was lie and say they were communists. The same was true in the Crucible. One guy in the
play, accuses someone of being a witch because he wanted his land. Another accuses even the most
noble of citizens of being a witch. the play was designed to make fun of McCarthyism and to show
just how ridiculous it really was. By the end of the play the people begin to realize it has gone too
far. This is the same as in McCarthyism, his "witch hunt" ended because people lost faith in what he
was doing. In The Crucible insubstantial evidence be presented during each event in the story. The
story is fairly related to McCarthyism and how he falsely accused people of being communist. The
start of mass hysteria is when Abigail and her friends get caught dancing in the forest with Tituba.
"Abigail: Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam's dead sisters.
And that is all."(Miller I). Abigail tries to lie and make a story to cover up the sin she has done. Also
to make herself look good. This is where the hysteria comes in. One thing that Abigail started the
hysteria for was John

The Crucible Fear Essay
As represented in Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, fear played an important role and is exploited
by the characters in the play. The Crucible beings with a group of girls accusing people of witchcraft
for their selfish benefit.Fear is an emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is
dangerous, likely to inflict pain , or a threat. Fear is an emotion that is capable of overtaking and
controlling one's state of mind and well being. However , fear can be used as a motivation factor.
Fear influenced these people to take extreme measures and act irrationally. Additionally, fear is a
master of suffering capable of haunting those who patronize it Moreover, in The Crucible this erratic
emotion causes people to fear being labeled

For instance, "I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not
need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are! It is
enough" (Miller 132). John Proctor is another character that is exploited by fear itself. He made the
sacrifice of confessing his doings with the devil regardless of what people thought in order to remain
alive. However, he believed that he would rather die than have his name be labeled as the Devil for
eternity. Proctor was in charge of his decision. This comes to show that some are willing to go to the
extreme, like be executed in order to have their name be good in society. Ultimately, many are
willing to go the extreme in order to be seen as a good person for as long as they live and eternity.
Generally speaking many people fear of ending up alone and having nothing to lose. The fear of
being alone can cause someone to feel insecure, depressed, and anxious. It causes people to feel
such anguish not having anyone to be there for them when needed. Moreover, some simply fear
being seen lonely because society has made it apparent that being alone is wrong , ergo why people
either want a partner or friend. This is relevant to both The Crucible and contemporary society as in
The Crucible Abigail in specific fears being alone. For instance, "You loved me, John Proctor, and
whatever sin it is, you love me

Essay on The Crucible Rhetorical Analysis
The Crucible Rhetorical Analysis
In a society where the thoughts and opinions of people are meant to blend in, a division actually
occurs where they are usually separated because of their opinions. The play and the event, The
Crucible and the "Red Scare" respectively, supply greatly to the difference of opinion because it
shows that people are willing to do anything to not only oust the people that they dislike, but try and
obtain the attention that they are seeking. During the "Red Scare," McCarthy targets the issue of
communism in the United States of America in order to become the favorable candidate for re–
election as well as obtaining the attention that he desired. This event parallels with Abigail Williams,
from Arthur Miller's

As the investigation went on, McCarthy sat back as he gained fame and his victims suffered from
his vicious lies. Abigail and McCarthy both tried to use pre–existing fear as an exploit in order to
help build their fame: Abigail wants the attention; and McCarthy, the recognition. In the play
Abigail started the malevolent lie just so she could achieve one simple goal: the disposal of
Elizabeth Proctor and the start of a spectacle. As the play states, "John–I am waitin' for you every
night," (Miller 838). Abigail obviously wants to make Elizabeth look like witch material in order to
eliminate Elizabeth and grant Abigail the spotlight that she wants. This shows that Abigail, much
like McCarthy, has a motive when it comes to using fears and exploits to deceive the town of Salem.
At the same time, Senator McCarthy wants to use the existence of communism in order to help build
his fame so he can easily be re–elected. Williams and McCarthy both show that when there is a
weakness or a fear in the system or the society; they had to get in the opportunistic strike at the
perfect moment in order to get the maximum amount of attention possible. During the time of the
"Red Scare" McCarthy stated that he "loved to manipulate people," (Oakley 207). He was able to
"swagger" in the meeting and he knew that he could stir up "turmoil and confusion" at a moment's

The Crucible
Puritans had a strict and disciplined lifestyle that was live to achieve the grace of God. They
believed that people that were sinners, liars, and adulterers were damned in the eyes of God. In The
Crucible the main antagonist was Abigail. She showed tendencies to be spiteful, jealous, and
vengeful.
One of the main antagonist was Abigail Williams, Abigail would use her spitefulness to blame other
people she showed hate too. In the text it states, "she is blackening my name in the village! She is
telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend her! (Miller 22). What abigail
was saying is that Elizabeth Proctor is trying to ruin Abby's name in the village. In the text it states,
"don't lie! To Hale: she comes to me while i sleep; she's always making me dream corruptions!..
Sometimes i wake and find myself standing in the open doorway and not stitch on my body! I
always hear her laughing in my sleep. I hear her singing her barbados songs and tempting me–
(Miller 41). Abigail is trying to blame tituba because before all this the tension was on abby and she
didn't like the tension so she turned it on Tituba.

In the text it states, "oh, i marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be–" (Miller 22).
Abby is saying how strong John is to be holding back her feelings toward her. Abby is just so
jealous she says things just to weaken john. In the text it states, " you did, you did you drank a
charm to kill John Proctors wife, you drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!"(Miller 18). Betty was
admitting that Abby drank a charm just so she can kill Goody Proctor, Abby is that jealous that she
will do anything to get rid of

Argumentative Essay On The Crucible
The Crucible: (Argument Essay) There's has been people who either have been manipulated and
then there's people that have manipulated people. Being experienced with situation can make it easy
for one to manipulate anyone. For example in "The Crucible" it demonstrates how one young child
can manipulate everyone from children to an adult into believing her vengeance story. With the right
situation experience one can manipulate with ease, but it shouldn't be easy for one to manipulate
half of the people in the town. In the story "The Crucible" Abigail and her cousin are accused of
being witches. IN act one it states "We did dance, uncle, and when you leaped out of the bush so
suddenly, Betty was frightened and then she fainted. And there's the whole of it" (Abigail Page 1).
They got caught dancing and doing things they were forbidden to do. Since that day the entire town
thinks of then as witches. That being said Abigail tries to make things right. Additionally in act one
Abigail states "let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word about a thing or I will came to
you in the black of some terrible night" (Page 19). From there forward Abigail started to accuse
Tituba. Tituba then confessed "He say Mr. Parris must be killed! And No! I don't hate that man. I
don't want to kill that man". But he says, "You work for me, Tituba, and I make you free!"(Page
44).This confession and accession give's Abigail and Betty a chance to act Innocent and accuse
random people as well. The accession keep coming and keep adding up. At the beginning of act one
there were only 12 people accused, now there are 55 people who are going to be questioned. In act
two Mary tells Elizabeth "I made a gift for you today, Goody Proctor. I had to sit long hours in a
chair, and passed the time with sewing" (Page 53). Then when Mary hands the poppet she went to
bed, and hale comes to talk to them. While hale was taking Cheever come to take Elizabeth. He then
finds the poppet and ask questions about it. Cheever then explains "Abigail William, sir she sat to
dinner in reverend Parris's house tonight, and without word nor warin' she falls to the floor" he said
"And he goes to save her and, stuck two inches in the flesh of her belly, he draw

Crucible Literary Essay
Literary Essay: The Crucible by Arthur Miller In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Reverend Parris is a
character in the play that is very static. His character does not evolve in many ways during the
course of the play. By the end of the play, Reverend Parris is still selfish, stubborn, and greedy.
However, one of his most prominent flaws at the begging of the play is his selfishness. At the very
beginning of the play, it is quite obvious that Parris is a selfish person. He only cares about himself,
his reputation and materialistic things. "(...) in the midst of such disruption, my own household is
discovered to be the very center of some obscene practice. Abominations are done in the forest–"
(pg. 11). This quote shows that he

I am paid little enough without I spend six pound on firewood" (both on pg. 29) these quotes show
that having things/possessions are important to him and he wants them right away, and he even
wants more money on his pay to get these extras. Another example of his greediness is that he wants
to break tradition to obtain the deed to the house he is given because he is a minister. Proctor: "Mr.
Parris, you are the first minister ever did demand the deed to this house" Parris: "Man! Don't a
minister deserve a house to live in? Proctor: "to live in, yes. But to ask the ownership is like you
shall own the meeting house itself (...)" (pg. 30). This shows that Parris wants what he wants, and he
will try and get it. He wants to break tradition to own a house he is not supposed to own, and he uses
his title of 'minister' as a way of pity to get it. Lastly, Parris wants golden candlesticks in the church
instead of the regular ones. Proctor to Hale: "(...) for twenty week He preach nothin ' but golden
candlesticks until he had them. I labor the earth from dawn of day to blink of night, and I tell you
true, when I look to heaven and see my money glaring at his elbows – it hurt my prayer, sir, it hurt
my prayer. I think, sometimes, the man dreams cathedrals, not clapboard meetin ' houses." (pg. 65)
This quote shows that Parris only cares about his image. He wants

Analytical essay for The Crucible by Arthur Miller
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an interpretation of the Salem witch trials of 1692 in Puritan
Massachusetts in which religion, justice, individuality and dignity play a vital role. These factors
define the characteristics of many of the most significant characters in the play. Some of them being
John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, Reverend Hale, Danforth and many others. The Salem witch trials
were a result of the lack of expression of individuality and the fact that no individual could expect
justice from the majority culture as a result of the deterioration of human dignity in the Puritan
society of Salem.
The Puritan religion intertwined relation with daily social and state affairs of

The limit on individuality is one of the many causes for the Salem witch trials, Abigail's choice of
accusing other individuals of performing witchcraft was a result of fear to punishment for her secret
demonstration of individuality. At first, Abigail used witchcraft as an escape goat of her possible
punishment. As the trials scaled higher levels, she found satisfaction from the trials because she
went from being just another powerless member of society to becoming her own individual and
holding the most dangerous and grand power of all. "Anyone who has the power to make you
believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices" Voltaire. As soon as Abigail
gained the individuality that she longed for, her dignity deteriorated to the point of committing
injustices.
The deterioration of justice in Salem was well represented by the unjust sense of guilty until proven
innocent that defined the court's process of determining the outcomes of the trials. "I have no
witness and cannot prove it, except my word be taken" (56). John Proctor's reluctance to tell Hale
what was discussed between him and Abigail portray the fear of being labeled as a guilty individual
and losing a precious amount of dignity due to the unjust procedures in court. In order for him to
maintain his dignity and innocence, he would have to have a witness and proof of his declaration,
which he
