characteristics of this artwork that you found noteworthy.
-
I was originally attracted to this piece of art because of catching immediate glance at the guitar. I happen to love guitar which is why I stopped to view it. After observing the painting longer I noticed an immense amount of emotion (and not the good kind). Everything but the guitar was blue and ‘haggered’. The old man looks frail and extremely upset. It looks as if he is homeless or has not taken care of himself due to some sort of depression. One of the main characteristics of this painting is the fact everything is in the blue hue except the guitar. This was one of Picassos first paintings to his ‘Blue Period’. This is a great piece explaining how intense the expressionist era was. Such intense emotion is prominent in this piece that is displayed by the blue hues, boney, slender, frail looking older man and the way he is positioned (almost a hugging fetal position aroudnthe guitar).
Incorporate what you have learned about the process and components of art appreciation.
-
While everything is in a blue monchromatic scheme that ‘vibrant’ brown guitar stands out the most. I interpreted this as maybe a ‘safe space’ or glimmer of hope that better times are to come. I can tell that this was a dark and emotional era for the artist as it is portrayed during his Blue Period artworks,
specially this one.
