Reflective Practice
Social-emotional learning benefits students as it is there to support behavior and educationally. There are many different ways that social-emotional learning can be implemented in the classroom. The competencies and themes that are currently emphasized in my classroom are self-management and responsible decision-making. The reason for one being self-management is because the students need to maintain the way that they follow instructions. Doing so, allows them to complete assignments, study for upcoming tests, and stay focused in class. Self-management is a key component for all learning whether for academic subjects, other content areas, or skills like playing a musical instrument (Miller, 2016).
Responsible decision-making is another competency that is important in the classroom because
it helps teach the students about their self-awareness and how to think about friends, family and the community. The best way to foster the skill of responsible decision-making is to present
students with choices in a variety of contexts. It’s important to create a student-centered atmosphere where students feel their thoughts and opinions can be expressed and valued (Department of Edu, n.d.).
Areas of growth are always there and needed, especially when it comes to dealing with students and in the classroom. The competencies that might be target areas for growth are relationship skills and social awareness. Relationship skills are very important especially in the classroom because if there isn’t a positive student/teacher, or teacher/student relationship then it is difficult for there to be any progress for either. Having good relationship skills in the classroom also avoids any conflict. Social awareness is another important competency as it is there for academic engagement and success, positive climate and culture and to achieve

educational equity. Empathetic students are more cooperative in class and develop strong interpersonal skills, such as perspective-taking, to effectively engaging with peers and teachers in learning tasks (Spinrad & Eisenberg, 2009). An important element of social awareness is recognizing “potentially competing cultural and race-related messaged and expectations” that may impact academic attainment (Jagers, Rivas-Drake, &Borowski, 2018, p. 6).
