Name: Alternative Assignment if doing Book Review (30 pts) 1. What book have you decided to read? (Be sure to include all the publication information in APA format). (5 pts) Alagona, P. S. (2022). The Accidental Ecosystem: People and Wildlife in American Cities (1st ed.). University of California Press. https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctv2kx88zg 2. Provide a brief summary of the book (you can use resources online but be sure to summarize this in your own words.). (5 pts) This book covers how wild animals entered American cities, why these cities became habitats for animals, how people are responding to this, and how we should in the future. Cities used to be full of animal life before they became the industrialized cities we know today. Naturally, this was before people inhabited the area, demolished these areas, and either killed or drove out the local species. But strangely, many American communities today have more wild creatures living there than they had 150 years ago, despite the sharp reduction in biodiversity across the nation. 3. Explain why you have chosen this book. Tell us about why this topic is so compelling and possibly relevant to where you are currently in terms of taking classes and plans for the future. (10 pts) I chose this book because I have lived in the city my entire life, with often seeing animals such as deer’s and raccoons. However, more often than not, the animals are dead on the side of the road. So, this book caught my attention because I was wondering how animals behave in other cities and how this came to be. As an environmental studies and sustainability major, I’m often learning how animals interact with the environment in relation to humans so this book will help provide great insight into my studies. I also think this will just help me more aware of animals in the inner city in general. 4. What aspect of ecology does the book address? (10 pts) While I have not read the book, yet it appears from the description that the book will focus on community ecology and how animals interact and/or adapt to the city surrounding them. I think another main aspect of the book with be population ecology. Since from what I’ve read, the book w ill go over how animal populations have changed over time in cities and the reasoning behind that.
