Why do you think health policies are important for understanding topics in global health? Because of their extensive impact, I believe that health policies are vital for comprehending global health concerns. They are put in place to aid in the maintenance and regulation of public health. These health policies can aid in the prevention and reduction of various diseases and illnesses that impact people all over the world. The goal is to develop and sustain health at a healthy level. Assignment: For each health policy you identified: Provide the name and source (web link) of the policy Write a summary (one or two paragraphs, 5-10 sentences) of the policy and include the following: o What is the policy for? o Who does the policy apply to? o Where is the policy implemented? o How does this policy relate to your health topic? How could concepts in medical anthropology be used to strengthen these policies? Health Policies U.S. policy: https://mhanational.org/policy-issues Summary The mental health policy from Mental Health America (MHA) works to help fight mental health issues and to improve access to care. advocacy partnerships in the treatment of major depression. The policy emphasizes the importance of accessibility, quality care, early intervention, and prevention. Concepts of medical anthropology may improve mental health policy by integrating concepts from the field and catering to various groups, particularly racial and ethnic minorities, and stigma reduction strategies. These strategies can be used effectively to engage communities and individuals with personal experiences in policy development and can increase policy relevance. International policy: press release: https://www.ilo.org/global/about-the- ilo/newsroom/news/WCMS_856821/lang--en/index.htm policy: https://www.ilo.org/wcmsp5/groups/public/---ed_protect/---protrav/--- safework/documents/publication/wcms_856976.pdf Summary The Mental Health at Work policy from the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Labor Organization (ILO)works to help guide and strategize on improving worker’s mental health within their jobs. Implementing precautions can be beneficial and successfully help to maintain these policies. Preventing work-related mental health issues and continuing to support employees with prior mental health problems are examples of such practices. These rules impact individuals such as government officials, employees, and companies. Following these standards, the creation of safe and healthy environments to support employees’ mental health is of high importance according to the policy. It is implemented to give guidance and proposals to international stakeholders within the workplace. From a global perspective, it has been made to be adaptable and relevant in various countries and work settings. Comparison of Health Policies How are these policies similar? Mental Health America’s mental health policy and the World Health Organization’s Mental Health at Work policy are intended for the improvement of mental health outcomes, ensuring better access to treatment, and addressing the determinants that give rise to mental health ailments. Both initiatives emphasize prevention, early intervention, and quality treatment. They also address the issue of care availability, breaking down these barriers and improving quality care for patients with mental disorders. Also, they identify cultural aspects in racial and ethnic minorities thus fighting for inclusive, culturally relevant practice. They further consider the effects of socioeconomic status, occupational stressors, as well as the need for advocacy and public education. In general, such policies emphasize a holistic or total approach toward mental health policy.
How are they different? The World Health Organization (WHO) and Mental Health America (MHA), all have mental health policies. MHA focuses on the United States, with the goal of improving access to care and assistance for people suffering from mental diseases, particularly serious depression. The WHO-ILO policy on mental health at work takes a global approach, addressing workplaces worldwide and emphasizing the creation of safe and healthy work environments. The MHA policy focuses on legislative and regulatory reforms, public awareness campaigns, and lobbying partnerships, whereas the WHO-ILO strategy focuses on psychological risk management, organizational interventions, and workplace culture transformation. Within the US healthcare system, the MHA policy covers mental health issues, access to care, and stigma reduction, whereas the WHO-ILO policy focuses on workplace mental health and the impact of work-related factors on mental wellness. After the assignment Based on your knowledge of your health topic (from the annotated bibliography and other field assignments), how could these policies be improved to address your health topic? These policies on mental health at work are relevant to my health topic since they emphasize the importance of preventing mental health concerns through psychosocial risk management and providing the right type of access. It highlights how to manage mental health issues in the workplace, as well as the need for it in everyday life. This is relevant to the health problem because it acknowledges the impact of the concerns on mental health and encourages risk-reduction methods. These types of treatments can be quite beneficial in assisting with the improvement of an individual's mental health difficulties. Medical anthropology can be used to help design socially and culturally relevant mental health policies that are more beneficial than harmful. Using key concepts like cultural competencies, social determinants of health, and even an emic perspective can help to establish effective policies and define the value and reputation of all-inclusive work and life environments.
