Discussion Board Question 4
?
After watching
Angry Inuk
, recall the individual values and social values that
you identified in Module 2 (see Learning Activity 2-1 and the list of values
that you constructed then).
In your discussion board post:
1.
Identify one of the individual values you hold. Explain how this
individual value informs your opinion regarding the animal rights
movement position against traditional seal hunting (i.e., whatever
side you take in this conflict).
2.
Identify a social value that you believe is commonly held in Canada.
Explain how this social value can also be used to take a similar
stance to your own, regarding this conflict between the animal
rights movement and traditional seal hunters.
Compassion is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It is
a feeling of concern for the suffering of others and a desire to help them. My
compassion for animals informs my opinion regarding the animal rights
movement position against traditional seal hunting. I believe that traditional
seal hunting often involves cruel and inhumane methods, such as shooting or
clubbing seals to death. I believe that these methods are unnecessary and
cruel, and I support efforts to find more humane ways to harvest seals, or to
end seal hunting altogether. For example, in the documentary
Angry Inuk
, we
see how seals are often shot multiple times before they die, and how they
are sometimes clubbed to death. This is clearly cruel and inhumane
treatment, and it is something that I cannot support.
Respect for diversity
means valuing the differences between people and groups of people, and
accepting and appreciating the unique cultures, traditions, and beliefs of all
Canadians. I believe that we should respect the right of Indigenous peoples
to practice traditional seal hunting, even if we disagree with the methods
that they use. Traditional seal hunting is an important part of the culture and
livelihood of many Indigenous peoples. It is a way for them to connect with
their heritage and to provide for their families. I understand that traditional
seal hunting methods can be cruel and inhumane. However, I believe that we
can find ways to protect the welfare of seals without preventing Indigenous
peoples from practicing traditional seal hunting. We can do so by working
with Indigenous peoples to develop more humane hunting methods. We can
also work to educate the public about the importance of traditional seal
hunting to Indigenous culture and livelihood.
By respecting the right of Indigenous peoples to practice traditional seal
hunting, we are upholding the Canadian value of respect for diversity.
