Final Project Topic Environmental Issue: Invasive Species Local Community Affected: Tennessee Government Resources In this section, outline the two government resources that you will use to respond to the Milestone One questions below. Government Resource #1: Title: Development of Techniques and Damage Control of Wildlife Invasion and Depredating Birds Citation in APA format: USDA. Methods Development and Damage Management of Depredating Birds and Invasive Wildlife. United States Department of Agriculture. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/wildlife_damage/nwrc/factsheets/2023/Methods_Develop ment_Damage_Management_%20Depredating_Birds_Invasive_Wildlife.pdf How does this resource relate to the environmental issue you chose? Does the information in the resource apply to your local community or your state? Explain.
In an effort to address the Tegu invasion problem, a group of scientists from the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) made this information public. Along with a list of those affected, it also describes the types of flora and species that the Tegu preys on. This website is completely applicable to my area. The article explores the monsters' presumed origins as well as other significant information that might aid in halting the damage they are causing. Government Resource #2: Title: The Race to Keep Invasive Tegus Out of Everglades National Park Citation in APA format: https://www.nps.gov/articles/the-race-to-keep-invasive-tegus-out-of-everglades-national- park.htm How does this resource relate to the environmental issue you chose? Does the information in the resource apply to your local community or your state? Explain. The implications that the Tegu could have on nearby species and the environment are explored in this article. It goes into extensive detail on the animal itself and its preferences. The fact that the animal has a similar impact on our ecosystems makes this information pertinent to my community. Milestone One: Environmental Issue Questions Respond to the following questions using the government resources cited above to support your responses. 1. What impact has this issue had on the environment within your community and your state? The Argentinian Giant Tegu's greatest obstacle is its adaptability, which allows it to survive and thrive in a range of environments. Tegus may roam about and act as an opportunistic predator, which allows it to swiftly have a big impact on a region. They are notorious for raiding the burrows of nearby endangered species, such gopher tortoises, and for ingesting large amounts of plant matter and dead animals. Due to their demise, this has decreased the diversity of wild animals and harmed the ecology. 2. What impact has this issue had on human quality of life? Support your description with relevant examples.
Salmonella is quite common in the tegu, a lizard that may carry diseases, and its presence poses a severe hazard to the human population. These opportunistic predators have a wide range and have the ability to contaminate crops, gardens, and pet bowls. This might lead to Salmonella spreading to the human population, posing a microbiological and physical risk. On rare occasions, people have attempted to coral the animals, which has resulted in injuries and the requirement for expensive medical attention. Therefore, it is crucial to protect the wellbeing of these animals. 3. What impact has this issue had on the economy within your state or local community? The invasive species, the tegu, is causing significant damage to native ecosystems, trapping nearly 1000 wild tegus annually. This rapid population growth necessitates additional funding to protect local native species and endangered animals, affecting local governments and residents.
