If so, what does this help you better understand? I can definitely better understand the effects of expectations of masculinity and femininity in my thinking and behaving. This is most prevalent in how I was raised to speak and act. As a woman, growing up, I was expected to not only be soft spoken, but to be cautious in my opinions and interactions, especially when in relation to men. Because I was taught that men commonly treat women poorly to get their attention, I understood that I was supposed to accept that behavior and mistreatment. I was able to truly understand how much both young men and women are taught to behave and how many behaviors are learned through watching others growing up and reading myths and stories. 2) Can you better see how culturally constructed notions of gender have been replicated in patterns of inequality and cultural institutions? If so, what does this tell you about how gender shapes our culture? Yes, I can better see how cultural notions of gender have been replicated in patterns of inequality and cultural institutions. This is especially seen in gender roles in America and the stereotypes regarding the work of women and men. In American culture, women are still, partially, expected to be caregivers and house makers and men are supposed to be the bread winners. In my own experiences of dating, I have seen a lot of truth in this as I have told men that I fully intend to be self-reliant and maintain a good job. In a lot of ways their reactions have changed me and how I have decided to uphold myself.
