ANTH005 Exercise 4 (20 points) Type Attribute 1: Color Attribute 2: Design Number of Sherds in Type Ceramic #1 white Lines+horizontal, vertical 1 Ceramic #2 Glossy black Glossy and smooth surface 5 Ceramic #3 peach Yellow finish with random patterns 1 Ceramic #4 Light tangerine Matte finish 3 Ceramic #5 tangerine White polka dots on some areas 2 Ceramic #6 Stone gray Dots on the edge 2 Ceramic #7 Shadow gray Rings with designs in them 1 Ceramic #8 Rough gray none 2 Ceramic #9 Dark gray Shapes and dots with different colors 2 Our group received a bag full of different types of artifacts. The first big difference between the artifacts that stood out to us is the color, so we decided to make that as our first attribute. At first, many of the artifacts were similar colors, so it was challenging to distinguish them into very specific colors. For example, when looking at the ceramics #6-9, we could distinguish that even though they look the same scheme of color, we organized them based on the fadedness of the color and the texture, in addition to the color. For our second attributes, we decided to distinguish them into different kinds of designs. When looking at the artifacts, we noticed the patterns or the carvings on the surface of the ceramics. Some of the ceramics had paintings on it such as polka dots or the rings with random designs on it. And others had
different patterns of carvings on it, which added texture to the ceramics. Although lots of the artifact sherds appear to be the same at first, carefully investigating the materials helped us understand the small detailed characteristics of sherds that have in common, or distinguish each other. Throughout this exercise, I learned a new way of analyzing and constructing the data that we obtain from observing simple artifacts and making it easier for the professional archaeologists to further contemplate the archaeological material.
