1. Choose 2 of the cultural biases we covered, explain what they mean and how they manifest themselves in intercultural contexts, then discuss potential ways to challenge them. Ethnocentrism is defined as the belief that one’s own cultural values, norms, beliefs, and social practices are superior to other cultures. Ethnocentrism manifests itself in a big way in the American culture, it had been instilled in most American households that when speaking to someone as a sign of respect you should look them in the eyes. To do otherwise is to be dishonest and disrespectful. However, in other cultures it can be seen as rude to look someone in the eyes while speaking to them. Stereotyping is defined as a form of generalization about a group of people. Stereotyping involves creating an outgroup, identifying differences from the outgroup to your group, making judgements about those differences and applying it to all members of that outgroup. For example, when we drive and we see a vehicle with an out of state plate driving erratically, that state and its occupants get labeled as terrible drivers when that is not the case. The way to challenge ethnocentrism as well as stereotyping is to take the time to speak to people, learn about cultural norms where they are from and to do research to break stereotypes and try to understand why a certain action is performed.
