Class Participation Guidelines: You should plan to spend the same amount of time each week on this class as you would an in- person lecture: 3 hours "in class" interacting with other students on the discussion board, watching videos, and reviewing the lecture notes, plus 6 hours per week to complete the assigned readings, prepare for and complete the quizzes/exams, and post insightful comments to the discussion board. Everyone reads and works at different speeds, but students should plan to dedicate 6-9 hours each week to this class. Weekly Schedule: Mon-Wed : Read the textbook and assigned articles. Optional : review lecture notes and watch recommended videos. Wed before noon : Post an insightful reflection and critical thinking question to the Discussion Board. Wed 1:30-2:50pm : Engage with the professor and students in the weekly Zoom meeting. Friday before noon : Complete the Vocab Quiz. Optional: comment on other students’ discussion board posts. Attendance: Attendance is very important in an online class. You cannot be passive; you are required to be active through participation in coursework, zoom meetings, and the discussion board. You are expected to attend class each week, which will be documented through the completion of tests and quizzes, submission/completion of assignments, or communication with the instructor.

Discussion Board Etiquette: The discussion board is designed for students to discuss and elaborate on course concepts. Most discussion topics will ask you to write a reflection on the assigned articles or videos using the key terms from the textbook and lectures. Make sure your discussion board posts are insightful and specific and please proofread your posts! **Remember to be respectful of the professor and your fellow classmates! Students who are disrespectful or misuse the discussion board may be dropped from the course. Plagiarism and Academic Honesty: Academic honesty is expected of all students at all times. Students are required to do their own work and absolutely NO copying from other students OR the internet will be tolerated. Plagiarism is taking the work of someone else and submitting it as your own for any purpose. According to the SCC Student Standard of Conduct (https://www.scc.losrios.edu/about-us/our- values/student-rights-and-responsibilities/student-standards-of-conduct) , plagiarism includes the following: Incorporating the ideas, works, sentences, paragraphs, or parts of another person’s writings, without giving appropriate credit, and representing the product as your own work. Representing another’s scholarly work as your own. (This includes copying another student's work from a previous semester or copying and pasting from a file sharing website like Chegg, Quizlet, or CourseHero.) Submitting a paper purchased from a research or term paper service. If cheating of any sort occurs, a grade of zero will be assigned for the assignment. The matter will be referred to the Division Dean and the Campus Discipline Officer for appropriate action which could include, but may not be limited to, failing the class or even being expelled from school.

Read the Academic Integrity Handbook from MIT (https://integrity.mit.edu/) for more information about the importance of submitting your own work. Email: Please include your full name, course title, and section time in all emails, so that I can best respond to your inquiries (Ex. Joey Ramone, Anth 300, TH 9:00-10:20). You must activate your SCC gmail account to receive messages and notifications about the class. 18 Etiquette Tips for E-mailing Your Professor. (https://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/professors-guide/2010/09/30/18-etiquette-tips- for-e-mailing-your-professor) Grading Rubric: Your grade in this class will be based on weekly Discussion Board posts (10 points each); Zoom participation (5 points per week); weekly Quizzes (15 points each); a Research Paper (50 points); Presentation (30 points); and Midterm and Final Exams (50 points each). A conventional grading scale will be used (A=100-90%, B=89-80%, C=79-70%, D=69-60%, F=59-0%). Discussion Board:

Additionally, each student will post a critical thinking question to help guide the class discussion we will have during our weekly Zoom meeting. The reflection should be 100-200 words (5 pts) + one discussion question (5 pts) = 10 points for each discussion board post. The lowest two discussion board scores will be dropped at the end of the semester. Zoom Participation: Each week we will have one synchronous Zoom meeting (Weds 1:30-2:50pm). The meeting will be a seminar-style discussion about the course topics and address the questions posed in the discussion board. Attendance is mandatory and I encourage students to keep their cameras on during the discussions to increase engagement and conversation. Quizzes: There will be one quiz each week that will focus on the key terms and concepts from the textbook and a short essay question from one of the assigned articles. You will need to have reviewed all the week’s material before starting the quizzes. You will have 30 minutes to complete each quiz. The lowest two quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester. **Hint: create a study guide of key terms and concepts ahead of time and use it during the quizzes. Read the assigned articles in advance and take notes or highlight important information. Exams: The midterm and final exams will be take-home essays and must include the key terms and citations from the textbook, articles, or videos. The midterm and final will be semi-cumulative, with each covering half the course respectively. Research Paper: There will be a 5-7 page essay due at the end of the semester on the topic of your choosing. You must use the textbook and/or assigned articles as sources for your paper. ALL other sources must be

Only peer-reviewed books, journal articles, and newspaper articles may be used. Grammar and clarity of your argument will count towards your grade, so please proofread your paper thoroughly before turning it in. No late papers will be accepted. **Written Assignments and Exams require citations from the textbook, articles, lecture notes, and approved websites/videos. Anyone can publish a website and fill it with opinions or misquoted information; therefore, only academic, peer-reviewed, or professor-approved websites will be allowed. Please follow the APA or MLA guidelines outlined by the Purdue Online Writing Lab (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/resources.html) . Presentation: Each student will record a 10 minute presentation using the program Screencast-o-matic (https://screencast-o-matic.com/screen-recorder) (or equivalent) summarizing the main points of their paper and the significance to the field of Biological Anthropology. You may use Powerpoint, short video clips, visual aids, do a demonstration, or perform a play (be creative!). The presentations will be posted on the discussion board during the last week of class. Late Work: Late work will only be accepted with a documented excuse. You must contact me before the assignment is due and then provide a doctor’s note, court summons, etc. with your work when you turn it in. Since the lowest grades of quizzes, discussions, and activities are dropped, extensions will only be granted in emergency circumstances. Accommodations: If you are a student with a learning disability, or other special needs, please let me know as soon as possible if you need special accommodations. If you think you might need accommodations, please submit an Online Service Request Form at the Disability Services Program for Students website (https://www.scc.losrios.edu/dsps/) .
