Basic Terminology Breeding animal – parent stock, an animal who is going to reproduce One bull can get about 25 cows pregnant Market animal – harvest to make meat out of the animal Castrated Males are preferred because of the temperate and it produces more tender meat. Feeder animal – Young animal that has been weened for feeder purposes and then eventually they become a market animal. Purebred livestock – All one breed. Crossbred/Composite – Crossing different breeds. Crossbreeding isn't possible unless purebred animals are still being produced. Hybrid Vigor – The ability for crossbred livestock to outperform the average of their purebred parents. Seedstock Production Systems – Trying to produce Purebred animals. Commercial Livestock Production Systems – Utilizes crossbreeding. Market animals are the major focus. Buys from a seedstock production Maternal traits - Females in the breeding herd. How good of a mother, how much milk, etc. Terminal traits USDA Quality Grades USDA Yield Grades
