1) What are some of the most unique aspects of Native American mythology compared to the other mythologies we have studied? What does Native American mythology tell you about Native American society and culture? There is a significant belief among all tribes that, beneath all individual spirits and personifications of the divine, there is a common creative life force, sometimes referred to as "the Great Mystery," that manifests itself throughout the cosmos, in every human, animal, tree, and grain of sand. Every tale, as well, is a manifestation of this life force. A particular aspect of this viewpoint is the significant role played in the stories by animals, who frequently communicate with and aid people. Individual members of a species were viewed by most tribes as manifestations of the species' spiritual archetype, which embodied a specific spiritual power. Native American myths, such as tales of origin and heroic adventures, encompass all sorts of prevalent worldwide. However, they are especially rich in 'trickster' myths. Coyote and Iktome are two notable examples. The trickster is an ambivalent figure who exemplifies the characteristics of early human development (both cultural and psychological) that enable civilization while also causing issues. He embodies the least developed stage of existence, in which bodily desires dominate.
