March 22, 2023 England_WildlifeDecline_DRAFT_TeaganTorregrossa DRAFT: Wildlife decline in England By Teagan Torregrossa Life after Humans Wildlife in England thrived before the introduction of humans invading the area, we like to pretend that we are co-existing with the wildlife equally but in reality, there isn’t one ecosystem that has thrived better after the arrival of humans than they did before our arrival. It is not natural or them to go from a forest full of trees and protection to asphalt roads and deadly cars all over the place. Over time many places, not just England have seen a substantial decline in the wildlife numbers, some animals even going extinct. Since 1066 AD the Human population has increased by 45-fold (45 times). Over time, the opinion of people has changed from hunting all animals regardless of their purpose, to protecting them with laws. Although this is a good thing, there are people out there who believe it isn’t doing anything to benefit the human species. But the least we could do is have respect for the animals that lived in the area before humans invaded it. There is now a decent number of animals on the endangered species list due to habitat destruction, global warming, and as mentioned before, new construction. The UK has been putting forth an effort to help these animals with the hope of replenishing their numbers once again. Otters These beautiful animals have come close to extinction in England, although they can be found in many places all over the world they are considered ‘near threatened’ in England. The otter lost most of its population in England and Wales from the 1950’s to Teagan Torregrossa
March 22, 2023 England_WildlifeDecline_DRAFT_TeaganTorregrossa the 1970’s due to a vast amount of pesticide polluting the waterways. They had escaped and were able to survive in the cleanest waterways in Scotland. In the present-day otters are protected in England under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, in the past years since then it is said that there are about 10,300 otters living in and amongst the UK, the numbers are still rising, and their habitats will continue to be closely monitored and protected. Hazel Dormouse Survey The dormice are a highly protected species in England considering they are classified as extinct in 12 other countries; they are said to have about 930,000 in England and Wales. These animals are protected under the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations of 2017, the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, and the Natural Environment and Communities Act of 2006. The handling or moving of any Dormice is to be considered an unlawful act. The Dormouse Survey is used to help determine the presence of a living/livable dormice habitat. The dormouse is a very important species because they are considered a “sensitive species”. When a dormouse is comfortable to live in certain places and locations, it helps researchers place and rehome other environmentally sensitive animals in the same area. Adder Snakes The adder snakes are probably one of the higher animals at risk today, most recent research has shown that up to 90% of their population has Teagan Torregrossa

Researchers have even explained that they are worried if the trend was to continue that the adder snake could possibly become extinct as soon as 2032. It is sad to know that a huge reason to their decline in population is due to their habitats being destroyed by agricultural works and construction. These projects have been eliminating their natural home and giving this species less and less places to stay. These snakes are of course protected by law, but with no efforts being made to stop the agricultural works, the loss of these creatures may be inevitable.
