Some describe the pain of facing discrimination within their families and Westernized Native cultures for others the experience of living as two-spirit is met with healthy acceptance. Not bound by rigid definitions of what it means to be male or female, two-spirit people are more flexible, open to new ideas and to change, which can benefit society. Although we live in a world that tries to provide an image of the typical male and the typical female, in fact the definitions are not so clear, according to John Peters-Campbell, a Martinez family friend. Because of their racial/ethnic identity, gender, and sexual orientation, as well as their population's sexual orientation, Native Americans were neglected as a result of colonialism. By using these ideas to further denigrate Indigenous people, Christian European colonizers condemned same-sex relationships and gender diversity.
