1. Choose one of the subfields in anthropology and explain what is distinctive about its approach to the human condition. Researchers in the field aim to comprehend the social and cultural underpinnings of language itself and investigate how linguistic practices are rooted in social and cultural formations. Linguistic anthropology studies the nature of human languages in the context of those cultures that developed them (Linguistic Anthropology, n.d.). 2. How might a college undergraduate benefit from taking a course in anthropology? Anthropology relates to the science of humans, how they developed our history and where we came from. It can be beneficial as it can teach us about social behaviors and why humans look the way we do. It teaches us our past, present, and future. 3. What are three skills that you can learn as an anthropology major and describe how those skills are relevant to your own field of study. Anthropology training develops social comfort in strange situations, critical thinking, and strong oral and written expression skills. Anthropology courses teach careful record-keeping, attention to detail, analytical reading, and clear thinking (Skills Learned, n.d.). As a cook, chemistry is always involved. I have seen some exciting things happen to food after er having b in a fridge for too long. These strange situations can so sometimes be fixed, but the skill of being able to be comfortable in an uncomfortable situation. This can also be applied to critical thinking skills; you have to be able to fix dishes that have gone wrong. Public speaking skills are great for avocation in the workplace and in the kitchen.
4. What does it mean when anthropologists claim that their discipline is holistic, comparative, and evolutionary? Provide examples for each concept. “The holistic perspective means that ‘no single aspect of human culture can be understood unless its relations to other aspects of the culture are explored.’ It means anthropologists are looking for connections between facts or elements, striving to understand parts in the context of the whole ( Anthropology – Approaches and Methodologies at COMP6044 , 2012).” An example of this approach is using multiple fields of anthropology to investigate the story. “The comparative approach... implies that general theories about humans, societies or cultures must be tested comparatively-... ‘likely to be mistaken unless they consider the full range of cultural diversity ( Anthropology – Approaches, and Methodologies at COMP6044 , 2012).” For example, when researchers are studying chimpanzee cognition, they contrast chimpanzee performance on cognitive tests with that of young human children. Environmental anthropology studies how people interact with their surroundings, including how we shape the environments in which we live and how these interactions influence culture and social structure (Environmental Anthropology · Anthropology (ANTH), UH Mānoa, Hawai i, n.d.). An example of this is ʻ when environmental anthropologists research a wide range of subjects, including biodiversity preservation, resource extraction, climate change, and deforestation. 5. a. Briefly bullet point the history of scientific thought as discussed in the book. Aristotle was considered the father of modern science because he was the father of the scientific method. The nonscientific methods of knowing are only employed in conjunction with the
scientific approach during the scientific process. Science's four main objectives are to describe, explain, predict, and control. b. How does this history contradict or support your previous knowledge or experiences? This changes things for me personally because I did not know that the Scientific method went so far back in time. I will be honest; I do not know much about how we have developed theories in science. This information will help me later in the future.
