According to Kett (2003), “the concept of adolescence was developed in the United States
by Stanley Hall and his many followers between 1890 and 1920” (p. 355) with an
anthropological viewpoint. The anthropologists believe that adolescence is a much more
stressful period of human life in modern society than in primitive times. They backed their
argument on the premise that modern societies lacked a natural path to progression from
adolescence to adulthood (Kett, 2003). I tend to agree with this anthropological viewpoint
because of the confusion, geopolitical, and socioeconomic crisis adolescents face today.
Also, the World Health Organization (2023) writes that adolescence is the phase of life
between childhood and adulthood, from ages 10 to 19, a unique stage of human
development, and a time for laying the foundations of good health. The organization added
that adolescents experience rapid physical, cognitive, and psychosocial growth, which
affects how they feel, think, make decisions, and interact with the world around them.
Are you currently working with, or have you ever worked with adolescents? Explain.
I am a tenth-grade mathematics and science teacher at the University High School in
Eswatini, a youth pastor in my church, and I am currently working with adolescents in
various capacities. A few months ago, I took the adolescents in our church on a mission trip,
distributing food parcels to vulnerable households. They were humbled to see that many
people in our world do not have enough food, water, or a place to sleep. It was a sobering
reflection for them, which changed their preconception of our world. In school, I am looking
to pinpoint the best approach to use when dealing with adolescents. My goal is to make
them hardworking, productive, and responsible with their lives, but this is not happening. I
am between two decisions: to become hard on them or soft on them.
What do you hope to learn in this course about the adolescent experience in your
current or future work with adolescents
?
How can I make adolescents hardworking, productive, and more responsible with their lives
without offending them? I desire to learn how to build rapport and have a collaborative
relationship with adolescents so that they achieve their goals in life. Some authors say it is
important not to deal with adolescents harshly because it will make them more disobedient,
while others suggest that harsh discipline is required to make them straighten up. What is
the best strategy for working with adolescents? This is what I want to learn from this course.
A lonely adolescent, what can we do to revive her? (Shutterstock, 2023).
Explain one or two concepts you have learned about adolescence from the required
readings or videos thus far.
I learned about the macrostructural trends reshaping and reconstructing adolescence,
which will continue to impact adolescents’ lives in the future. These include patterns of
demographic change, economic restructuring and globalization, institutional shifts, criminal
justice reforms, and trends in health service delivery (Mortimer & Larson, 2002). Some
nations in North America, Europe, and Japan have rapidly growing older populations, and
the economically active adult population is shrinking. Secondly, “globalization of the
economy, which is accelerated by new communication technologies, poses another set of
changing realities, challenges, and opportunities for adolescents as they prepare for their
occupational futures” (Mortimer & Larson, 2002, p. 4). Also, rapid technological change is
another major factor that is certain to transform the lives of adolescents. These
macrostructural elements are reshaping and reconstructing adolescence in this century, and
we must find ways of incorporating them into our systems.
Explain how you will incorporate these ideas into an educational setting.
We need to reorganize our curriculum, instruction, and assessment to mainstream these
macrostructural trends in ways that benefit adolescents. Whether we like it or not,
globalization and technology are influencing adolescents, and replacing pen and pencil
ways of assessment with computerized systems of assessment will be better for
adolescents.
