Washer Cart Force vs. Acceleration
ACCELERATION(m/s^2)
FORCE (N)
Activity 1: Questions for Newton’s Second Law
Question 1: According to Newton’s Second Law F
= m
a
.
If the force applied to an object is doubled, what happens to the acceleration?
If the net force was doubled, acceleration must also be double as the mass
of the object will remain the same.
Question 2:
You observe a vehicle traveling on a highway. The vehicle is maintaining a constant
velocity. What can you determine about the forces on the vehicle?
Because the vehicle is maintaining a constant velocity, we know it is not accelerating, a=0. The mass of the vehicle remains the same. So, using F=ma, we know that mass is constant, because the mass of the vehicle doesn’t change. Then, we plug in acceleration. Because acceleration is 0, mass x 0 = 0. Mathematically then, we can conclude that a vehicle traveling on a highway while maintaining a constant velocity has a net force of 0 in its direction of motion. Obviously, the vehicle will still experience gravitational and normal force.
Question 3: What are some error sources in the Second Law experiment?
Error sources: human error using stopwatch, car finishing between slow motion frames, and friction of table. Question 4:
In the Second Law experiment, the acceleration is calculated by measuring the time
for the cart to move from the start point to the end point and applying the kinematics equation:
s

Explain how this equation is used to find the acceleration.
“s” is displacement, “a” is acceleration, and “t^2” is time squared. We can change the above equation around to find acceleration. This acceleration equation would be a=2s/t^2. From there on, we can plug in our s value and our t^2 value and use the equation to find acceleration.
