GCU College of Education LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE 03/2014 Teacher Candidate: Grade Level: Date: Unit/Subject: Instructional Plan Title Mae Jones Kindergarten 12/18/2022 Reading Dick and Jane Reading from left to right I. PLANNING Lesson summary and focus : Students will be able to read from left to right, from top to bottom and the students will be able to read page by page when reading from a book. Classroom and student factors : The class is made up of 15 students, teacher, and paraprofessional. Students are non-challenged students and struggling readers. The students will be divided in two groups. The struggling readers in one group while the non-challenged students in another group. Class is made up of African Americans and Caucasians it is a mixture of struggling students four Caucasians and three African Americans. Struggling students will be given one on one teaching, while the non- challenge students if finish before time will be given extra work. National / State Learning Standards: RL.K.2 With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details . https://www.education.com/common-core/kindergarten/ela/ Specific learning target(s) / objectives: Students will be able to retell what they have learned and give full details on what they have read from the text. Teaching notes: This reading plan will activate the student’s prior knowledge. Students will be able to make connection and prediction about what they are reading from the text. Agenda: Students will gather in a group for a read aloud session. Class will participate in a group, and students will pair into two groups. In the group they will be given a book to discuss after the read aloud and the students will be paired according to their abilities. The read aloud will last for 20 minutes each session for three days a week. Formative assessment: I will monitor and identify the progress by giving students a multiple-choice questionnaire assessment. I will ask the questions and ask the students which answers do they choose from, and the answer will be from A to C. Academic Language: Vocabulary Punctuation Grammar Key vocabulary: Dick and Jane reading book. Vocabulary words from the book Teaching on punctuation and where they belong and learning grammar from the book. The students will be asked about the vocabulary words and what they mean. Function: The purpose of the vocabulary words is to learn sight-words, identify punctuation, and learn grammar. The students will identify their knowledge by repeating the words and telling where the punctuation belongs. Form: Dick and Jane come with organized vocabulary and the students will be able to go over the words before reading and then retell the words as they see them in the book. Students will be shown where punctuation belongs and ask to place them where they belong for practice. I will implement the word to the students by repeating them repeatedly until they understand and Page 1 of 3
then I will help them practice grammar and punctuation. Instructional Materials, Equipment and Technology: Students will use computers, white boards, Videos, Pencil, Paper, and audio. Grouping: The first group which is the struggling students. I will work one on one with the struggling readers and the Paraprofessional will sit at the normal group table to ensure they are doing their work until I can finish with the struggling readers. Struggling readers as I read aloud will be asked to listen very carefully and when finish demonstrate what they have learned from the read out loud. II. INSTRUCTION A. Opening Prior knowledge connection: The lessons connect to prior knowledge because each student have the Dick and Jane book at home, so they are familiar with the vocabulary words, grammar, and punctuation. It gives diverse cultures the opportunity to learn about a book that have been around for centuries. Anticipator y set: The book is meaningful because it teaches about the closeness of family and what unity looks like in a family and the children playing with their parents illustrates a happy family life. B. Learning and Teaching Activities (Teaching and Guided Practice): I Do Students Do Differentiation I will read aloud Dick and Jane I will go over the vocabulary words Review Punctuation and grammar Ask questions about the story and ask the students to give me the correct answer from the multiple choice’s questions. Ask question about Dick and Jane Questions on the family How did the children enjoy play time. Multiple choice questions will be the assessments . Answer questions about the read aloud. Describe Punctuation Give an answer of whether words are used correctly Un Scrabble the correct grammar. Bubble in the right choice after given options Students that are challenge will be given more time and one on one help. The non-challenge students will be given activities and if finished beforehand they will be asked to do more activity sheets that are more challenging. III. ASSESSMENT Summative Assessment : . I will monitor and identify the progress by giving students a multiple-choice questionnaire assessment. I will ask the questions Differentiation: Students that are challenge will be given more time and one on Page 2 of 3
and ask the students which answers do they choose from, and the answer will be from A to C. one help. The non-challenge students will be given activities and if finished beforehand they will be asked to do more activity sheets that are more challenging. Closure: Students will be asked to come before the class and retell what they have learned from the reading aloud and describe what was challenging about the assessments. Homework: Students will be giving the Dick and Jane, and friends book for homework, they will practice on the vocabulary and the grammar. This will prepare the students for the next day in class when the read aloud is done again. The homework is skill-practice. Page 3 of 3
