This assessment is to cover important concepts in the chapters that are not otherwise covered in projects. You are expected to use higher level thinking from Bloom's Taxonomy, meaning I do not want simple definitions you can copy and paste. I want you to APPLY how these concepts can impact your education at ACC. Chapter 6 1) What are the four stages of the learning process ? How does knowing about these stages help you be in control about retaining information? Unconscious Incompetence, Conscious Incompetence, Conscious Competence, Unconscious Competence Knowing about these stages helps me be in control about retaining information by reading and processing (incompetence) and knowing, memorizing, understanding, and applying it into the real world (competence). 2) Model of Strategic Learning: Define these terms and then apply these concepts to your education at ACC. For example- how will you use self-regulation as a college student at ACC? Skill: Definition: refers to the learner’s content knowledge, self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses, and ability to employ effective skills such as goal-setting, active listening and reading, and note-taking. Example of concept as it applies to me at ACC: Reading along with what the professor is saying, participation in classroom activities, and note taking Will: Definition: refers to the learner’s state of mind. This includes motivation, how you feel about learning (ranging from fear and anxiety to excitement and joy), beliefs about your abilities, and your level of commitment to personal goals. Example of concept as it applies to me at ACC: My motivation and confidence I have in getting all of my work done at ACC.
Self-Regulation: Definition: is how the learner recognizes and manages each of these factors. To be strategic about learning, you may exert self-control in the form of time-management, emotional control, seeking assistance, and/or monitoring progress; a learner who does so is more likely to be successful than one who fails to self-regulate. Example of concept as it applies to me at ACC: Creating an academic planner, time management, and taking control of when and where I work on my assignments Academic Environment: Definition: encompasses factors that are external to the individual learner but still impact the learning process. Examples include access to academic support resources, the requirements of particular classes or assignments, teacher expectations, and the social context in which the learner lives. Example of concept as it applies to me at ACC: Access to the classrooms, the ACCelerator, and all over ACC. Chapter 9 3) Information Storage: Explain how memories are saved in long-term memory. What are the stages of memory and how does knowing this impact how we learn and remember information? Encoding, Storage, and Retrieval Knowing this impacts how we learn because we process the information so it becomes long-term memory and it is stored in long term and retrieval is the process of remembering it after any given period of time. 4) Which strategies for strengthening your memory appeal to you? Explain how you could apply three strategies from the textbook THIS semester. 1- Rehearsal – I could practice this skill by practicing the concept a repeated amount of times 2- Incorporate visuals – I could practice this skill by looking up visual diagrams of what I read 3- Chunkng – I could practice this skill by breaking my work down into smaller parts Bonus Question: Does anything in this POU help with your Big Question ( “I would be a better student if I…”) ? Yes, I would be a better student if I improved on my time management skills.
