Chapter 15 – Reconstruction & Renewal
Andrew Barea
McCoy / AMH 2070
03/21/2024
1 Who is the author of this chapter and what information can you find about the author elsewhere in the text?
The author of the chapter is Jerrell H. Shofner. You can find more information on him on page 275
2 According to this chapter, list 2 things that were in desperate need of “reconstruction”
They advocated for freeing slaves and the change of Southern society. 3 Florida stands apart from other areas of the South in the way that General Newton handled two main areas: politics & freedmen. Discuss both.
He told Florida Farmers that the slaves were freemen, and they were exclusively to pay them and not keep them prisoner. General Newton desired presidential reconstruction as well as wartime reconstruction.
4 Demand for cotton was (increasing or decreasing) during the early years of reconstruction. CIRCLE ONE
Decreasing
5 White And black farmers alike were given a new structure in which to run their land (called by 3 different terms in the text). What is one of the names of this new agricultural system used by the author?
Sharecropping
6 What 2 issues engulfed Florida as well as the entire nation, just as Lincoln feared it would?
Lincoln feared not only slavery but also the division of the North and South and the tensions of the Civil War.
7 Shofner describes a very sticky situation in regards to President Johnson restoring land ownership to former confederates. Reflect on how this affects the statewide condition at the time.
All of the property was being reestablished with the exception of the slaves. Previous confederates that swore their dedication to the Association got acquittal and exoneration.
8 What does the text mean about Lincoln’s “non-punitive ideas”?
Reunification of the country
9 We know that “Black Codes” took shape despite the efforts of the Freedman’s Bureau. Discuss the ways that Florida fell into the practices
The black codes defined who was considered a black person and forbade African Americans from holding political office, voting, serving on juries, serving in militias, or marrying white people.
10 Why was the Civil Rights Act of 1865 so ineffective?
The demonstration neglected to safeguard political or social privileges like democratic and equivalent facilities like restrooms and drinking fountains.
11 What legislative measures marked the end of martial law in Florida?
he procedures for ending martial law would likely involve executive orders, decrees, or possibly legislative actions depending on the circumstances.
12 Describe the internal divisions that developed in Florida during the reconstruction years.
Cattle ranching, cigar manufacturing, and phosphate mining were among the Florida internal divisions.
13 What 2 measures were taken by conservative whites to prevent Freedmen from exercising their rights to suffrage?
Separate yet equivalent, they were constantly served last and sat toward the rear of the transport. They taxed Africans and fined them for voting.
14 What is the contrasting difference between reconstruction effects in middle and peninsular Florida?
The peninsular was discrete however equivalent and burdened the Africans. The middle didn't want the slaves to have the right to vote or even be equal to them.
15 When Shofner turns from reconstruction to renewal, list industries and individuals who played a role.
Dairy cattle industry, Stogie enterprises, phosphate mining, start of traveler visiting florida, and Florida's transportation industry.
16 The late entry of what industry had a negative impact on Florida’s renewal?
The late passage of the space business adversely affected Florida's restoration. Preceding the 1950s, Florida's economy depended intensely on agribusiness, the travel industry, and the military.
17 The political temperature in Florida changed dramatically in the renewal years. Expound on that and include the one negative piece of legislature that added to already active Black Codes.
A law that added to Florida's Black Codes, which were already in effect, might have been an example of such a negative piece of legislation. Black citizens' rights could have been further restricted by these laws, which would have perpetuated systemic inequality and reinforced discriminatory practices. Instances of such regulation could incorporate elector concealment regulations, segregationist strategies, or measures focusing on financial open doors for Dark people and networks.

has an option for members to buy a lifetime membership today for $4,500 and never have to pay annual membership dues.

It is now December 31, 2020 (t = 0), and a jury just found in favor of a woman who sued the city for injuries sustained in a January 2019 accident. She requested recovery of lost wages plus $200,000 for pain and suffering plus $40,000 for legal expenses. Her doctor testified that she has been
unable to work since the accident and that she will not be able to work in the future. She is now 62, and the jury decided that she would have worked for another 3 years. She was scheduled to have earned $43,000 in 2019. (To simplify this problem, assume that the entire annual salary amount
would have been received on December 31, 2019.) Her employer testified that she probably would have received raises of 3% per year. The actual payment for the jury award will be made on December 31, 2021. The judge stipulated that all dollar amounts are to be adjusted to a present value
basis on December 31, 2021, using a 6% annual interest rate and using…
