Sherry Gerges, CFO of the Hampshire Company Date:

Alternative Costing Method
In this memo, I will be discussing an alternative costing method that could benefit our
company and describe the main characteristics of that method. I will also discuss what a
company should look for when determining whether to adopt that costing method. Lastly, I will
recommend whether the company should adopt this alternative costing method. Main Characteristics
The alternative costing method that I believe can benefit our company is batch costing. This is used when there is a batch ordered of identical items. this would be the best alternative costing method for Hampshire Company because the company only sells the same product, umbrellas, so the batch costing method would be a simple method to use. Adopt
When determining whether a company should adopt a certain costing method, a company
should look to see if that method will work for the type of products it manufactures. For example, Hampshire Company manufactures umbrellas so to determine if an alternative costing method would work for them, they should see which one fits best with their company. Job costing wouldn’t work because it is for a company that sells unique items per order while batch costing is for a company that sells all identical items.
3
Method
I believe that Hampshire Company should adopt the batch costing method to simplify the system for themselves. Because they only manufacture one product with two different styles, they are more likely to utilize the batch costing method. Although it is similar to the activity-
based costing method, the batch costing method allows the company to treat each batch of products as a separate cost as opposed to each product on its own. In conclusion, the batch costing method would be a good alternative costing method for Hampshire Company to adopt.
