Davis 1 Terry Davis Maria Clarke ENC 1101 November 13, 2022 Annotated Bibliography Anitha, Fatima Shirly et al. “Association of digital media exposure and addiction with child development and behavior: A cross-sectional study.” Industrial psychiatry journal vol. 30,2 (2021): 265-271. doi: 10.4103/ipj.ipj_157_20 This is a short journal article. This source talks about how when children are exposed to a plethora of educational digital media, whether it be through the television or through a tablet or cell phone, it can lead to issues in their development and behaviors. The authors did a study using 613 children that were between the ages of 18 months to 12 years. They used testing data from developmental test such as Ages and Stages to help show that excessive amounts of television and tablet usage can lead to problems in communication, problem solving, and development of their personal-social skills. They also noticed a trend of boys having more aggression and behavior issues over girls, especially those that were alone while using digital media.  The tone and language of the article was easy to understand. It does support the argument for why educational television or tablet games would not be beneficial for children. Davis 2 This is a short journal article about what media devices are best for pre-school aged children according to the Italian Pediatric Society. The recommendation is that media devices can be a beneficial tool for parents and children when used in the correct way. The doctors recommend that no child under 2 should use technology as it can interfere with their learning development. After that age, technology can help with learning new words and how to interact well with others. Having the parents there interacting helps to solidify what they are learning on digital media. Well designed educational applications can promote learning but again are most beneficial when interacted with by an adult. If you limit the exposure to media and make sure that an adult is involved regularly, media can be a great tool for learning. The tone and the language in this article were easy to understand and gave a significant amount of information for parents about using technology with their child. This is a good article to use to support my argument for children using educational television or tablet games. It could have been better supported with concrete evidence on their findings or showing where the research came from. Middle school students seem to have the hardest time with their psychological well-being and mental health. That’s why this journal article has important information when it comes to meeting the needs of children in this age range with the use of media. Children in middle school have digital media preferences on what works best for them to learn and have better mental and psychological quality of health. The study done over 9 middle schools showed that most students
Davis 3 preferred their smartphone to learn from and communicate with. The ability for students to be able to learn with a landscape of options is what is benefiting these middle school students most. It allows them to expand their learning and not limit it to the classroom only or to a textbook. It is a healthy collaboration with the use of digital media. The tone and language were a little difficult to understand as it comes from international countries but is sufficient to help explain why children need to use technology not just to help with learning but how a preference can help their psychological and mental well-being. This short journal article speaks about how exciting and engaging the use of educational digital media is for children. Jennifer Petsche speaks about how games on tablets and computers can really change the way that children look at learning. It helps to grab their attention and is a valuable teaching tool. Sometimes students need other ways to learn the information being taught to them and games are a way that help to solidify what is being taught to them. Games allows for students to be able to use different parts of their brains and allow for other parts of the brain to take a break. It helps them to reset to keep their brains working properly. The use of educational games on a tablet or computer can be very rewarding for students. The tone and language of this article were easy to understand. This article supports my argument of that games on the tablet are great educational tools and can help students learn even more. The author should have had more sources and research to back up her article.
