CJ-140 3-1 Module Three Journal: Communicating with Others Shane Pratt CJ-140 Communication Skills for Criminal Justice Matthew Loux Southern New Hampshire University January 28, 2024
The cold-water faucet in my shower broke and the water wouldn’t shut off. We waited all weekend for the plumber to come fix it. The plumber finally called on Sunday night and was giving me instructions on different things to try to shut the water off (our only water shut off for the entire complex is at the street) until he could come the next morning. I explained to him that this is the fourth time that it has broke in the past couple months and the landlord doesn’t like to fix things right. The plumber took offense to that and said, “well I thought I fixed it right”. I didn’t mean he didn’t fix it right, I meant that our landlord never puts the money into having things fixed correctly, he takes the cheap way out. My verbal communication that offended the plumber was that he didn’t fix the water leak correctly. He thought I was insinuating that he was the one that didn’t fix it correctly, when I actually meant the landlord was too cheap to spend the money to fix it correctly. The tone of my voice is the nonverbal communication that offended the plumber. I was upset that the same faucet had already broken four times within the past few months and was now broken again. He could hear in my voice that I was upset about the situation. To improve the communication between the plumber and myself, I should choose my words better. I also should have explained what I meant better, so he didn’t think I was talking about him. I didn’t know he was the one who fixed it before. If I would have known that I wouldn’t have said anything negative about it not being fixed right. I also should have changed my tone of voice so I didn’t sound angry with him.
