Item Question Type Develop Question Relevance of Question to Interview Purpose Example Diversion How long have you lived in the area? This question type can help the person being interviewed feel more relaxed. Because it seems like a question that is not related to the problem at hand, they may feel less guarded. It can also serve to provide needed background for the interview subject. Question Type 1 (Required) Reflective Let me see if I’ve got this straight, so your wife got home drunk at midnight and started violently attacking you, correct? “These types of questions use the interviewee’s comments as a means of handling objections the interviewee has to responding to an initial question” (Grub & Hemby, 2018). Question Type 2 (Required) Directive Has your wife ever been violent to you in the past? “Directive questions help the interviewee understand the advantages of cooperation” (Grubb & Hemby, 2018). This question helps me understand the interviewee’s history with experiencing abuse. I’d then inform him of the process he’ll go through and all the resources available to him. Question Type 3 (Required) Indirect Can you share any aspects of your relationship with your wife that you feel are relevant to understanding the current situation? “This type of question helps interviewees express opinions, suggestions, or feelings” (Grubb & Hemby, 2018). This question helps me understand the interviewee’s thoughts or needs. I can use it to gather information about the victim and his wife’s relationship and how (if any) it led to the current situation. Question Type 4 (Optional) [Insert the question type.] [Insert the question.] [Explain how your question relates to your purpose or goal of the interview.] Question Type 5 [Insert the question type.] [Insert the question.] [Explain how your question relates to your 2
Question Variety [ In 50–100 words, explain how using a variety of question types may improve your interview strategy.] Using a variety of question types improves the depth and scale of the information I gather. Closed questions can acquire specific details, while open questions encourage more thorough responses, providing insights into thoughts and emotions. The reflective question helps the interviewee consider his experiences, encouraging self-awareness. Together with all the other different types of open questions, I can adapt to his communication style, uncover nuanced information, and maintain an engaging conversation. Thus, understanding the situation and the interviewee/victim better. References Grubb, R. E., & Hemby, K. V. (2018). Effective Communication in Criminal Justice. SAGE Publications, Inc.
