Cultural Event and Review
The cultural event that I watched was the Pow Wow Festival hosted by universities in
North America. The theme was
Balancing Two Worlds
held in Washington University, St. Louis.
The North American Indigenous Student Organization hosted the event where they engage in
Native American cultural activities such as singing, dancing, review old relationships while
making new ones and visit friends and family. The event is held annually and the main aim is to
remind themselves the traditions that share and promote preservation of their heritage that they
have shared for centuries.
I had a great time watching the event and was fascinated by and learned from many of
their aspects such as the artifacts, attire and colors. I also liked that the event is for all, whether
young or old. There were booths that displayed and sold all kinds of Native American delicacies.
Other booths sold pictures, jewelry, wood carvings and other items that people could use to
decorate their homes and learn more about the history of different Native American tribes. The
most favorite part of the event was when different tribes would engage in different activities and
compete to see who had the best of the dances, drawing and tribal attires. I enjoyed watching
their attires and listening to the music, which was quite different from my own culture.

Another aspect of the event that was quite fascinating was the traditional practice of the
dream catcher. This was a person whose intention was to protect people from bad dreams as they
sleep and allow only good dreams. I have never seen anything like it before. Considering the
cultural aspect of dreams, they reflect on individualism where a person’s goals are put ahead of
everything else. From the experience that I had with the Pow Wow cultural event, although not
virtual, I think it is an amazing way of bring people together and celebrating and preserving their
culture. I am not quite sure whether the event welcomes people who are not Native Americans,
but if not, this is the only aspect I would change about the event. Allowing other people to join
the event while being directed on what happens would be a great way from the world to connect.
This was an experience that triggered me to review my own culture and whether I knew
much about it as well as the differences and similarities between Native Americans and my
culture. I learned that cultural backgrounds are quite profound and no one should be judged by
their culture but rather should be celebrated. Today, we celebrate and embrace inclusivity and
diversity in our world. This means that if we could celebrate more about our cultures and those
of the people around us, we would become a united world.

To set the foundation for the course, you read about globalization in this week’s content and readings. As you prepare for this discussion, reflect on how globalization affects your personal life. Think in terms of your job, where you live, things you buy, etc. How would a world with weakened global connections impact your daily actions? How well would your local community be able to meet needs that are currently served by a global approach?
For our first discussion, develop your initial post in terms of your position for or against globalization. Explain your reasons for this decision. Use facts, figures, and research to back up your position.
For your response post, debate your position against those of your classmates. This discussion should set the standard for the rest of the course as we explore international business in more depth.

QUESTION 10
Syhoo Senior Center, a not-for-profit entity, enjoys the services of a group of high-school-age people who each agree to
work three afternoons a week for three hours each afternoon performing a variety of patient-related services, such as
writing letters for those who are unable to do so, delivering mail to the patient rooms, and pushing wheel-chair patients
across the grounds. The services rendered by these young people enhance the quality of life for the residents. They
could not be provided if they were not donated because there are not enough resources to do so. In year 2019, the
young people donated 5,000 hours in total. The services would have cost $10.00 per hour if they had been purchased
but they were worth $20 an hour to Syhoo Senior Center. A local CPA firm also donates its services to prepare the
annual tax return and other federal and state required paperwork which must be filed to maintain its status as a tax-
exempt organization. During 2019 the CPA firm…
