Surname 1 Name: Course: Professor: April 13, 2022 Cultural Event and Review The cultural event that I watched was the Pow Wow Festival hosted by universities in North America. The theme was Balancing Two Worlds held in Washington University, St. Louis. The North American Indigenous Student Organization hosted the event where they engage in Native American cultural activities such as singing, dancing, review old relationships while making new ones and visit friends and family. The event is held annually and the main aim is to remind themselves the traditions that share and promote preservation of their heritage that they have shared for centuries. I had a great time watching the event and was fascinated by and learned from many of their aspects such as the artifacts, attire and colors. I also liked that the event is for all, whether young or old. There were booths that displayed and sold all kinds of Native American delicacies. Other booths sold pictures, jewelry, wood carvings and other items that people could use to decorate their homes and learn more about the history of different Native American tribes. The most favorite part of the event was when different tribes would engage in different activities and compete to see who had the best of the dances, drawing and tribal attires. I enjoyed watching their attires and listening to the music, which was quite different from my own culture.
Surname 2 Another aspect of the event that was quite fascinating was the traditional practice of the dream catcher. This was a person whose intention was to protect people from bad dreams as they sleep and allow only good dreams. I have never seen anything like it before. Considering the cultural aspect of dreams, they reflect on individualism where a person’s goals are put ahead of everything else. From the experience that I had with the Pow Wow cultural event, although not virtual, I think it is an amazing way of bring people together and celebrating and preserving their culture. I am not quite sure whether the event welcomes people who are not Native Americans, but if not, this is the only aspect I would change about the event. Allowing other people to join the event while being directed on what happens would be a great way from the world to connect. This was an experience that triggered me to review my own culture and whether I knew much about it as well as the differences and similarities between Native Americans and my culture. I learned that cultural backgrounds are quite profound and no one should be judged by their culture but rather should be celebrated. Today, we celebrate and embrace inclusivity and diversity in our world. This means that if we could celebrate more about our cultures and those of the people around us, we would become a united world.
