Introduction

Why would someone confess to a crime he or she did not commit? Research has shown that there are, in fact, many instances of exactly this happening. Investigators use very effective tactics to extract confessions from suspects. Of course, if the suspect is guilty, that is a good outcome. However, the surprising number of false confessions which occur have led to videotaping as a method of helping prosecutors and juries determine the believability of a suspect's confession.
