Chapter S2, Problem 50EAP

Time Dilation.

  1. A student, after learning about the theory of relativity, decides to try to prolong his life by spending the rest of his life traveling in a car at 55 miles per hour (89 km/hr). If he does this while 70 years pass in his house, how much time will pass in the car? (Hint: If you are unable to find a difference, be sure to explain why.)
  2. A more clever student decides to prolong her life by cruising among the stars at a speed of 0.95c. How much time will pass on her spacecraft during a period in which 70 years pass on Earth? Will she feel as if her life span has been extended? Explain.
  3. Suppose you stay home on Earth while your twin sister takes a trip to a distant star and back in a spaceship that travels at 99% of the speed of light. If both of you are 25 years old when she leaves and you are 45 years old when she returns, how old is your sister when she gets back?

A severely injured Peter can only live for the next 3.5 hours. Before dying, he wants to go back to Earth which is 5 light-hours away. What should be the minimum cruise speed of the Peter's spaceship so that at least he can make it before he runs out of time? HINT: The answer is NOT 4.29x108 m/s.
The fastest spacecraft ever launched was the Helios probe, which travelled approximately 70,000 m/s as it passed close to the Sun. The speed of light is 3x 10^8 m/s. Suppose the Helios probe passed by a stationary observer on Earth. The observer can see an accurate clock ticking on the side of the Helios Probe. How many seconds on Earth are equivalent to one second on the Helios probe?
In 2030, the Australian Space Agency launches a spaceship to our nearest neighbour Alpha Centauri, approximately 4 lightyears away. According to a clock on Earth how long will the rocket take to get there if it travels at v=0.999c=299482km/s (where 'c' is the speed of light equal to 299782km/s)? About 2 years. O About 6 years. O About 4 years. Zero time.
