Chapter G, Problem G.7P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The mass spectrum of an alcohol (C5H12O) exhibits a base peak at m/z = 59. Whether the alcohol is most likely pentan-1-ol, pentan-2-ol, or pentan-3-ol is to be explained.

Concept introduction:

The mass of each C5H12O compound is  88 u.

Organic Chemistry: Principles And Mechanisms (second Edition), Chapter G, Problem G.7P

The molecular ion is produced from the loss of a nonbonding electron on O. The peak at m/z = 59 is due to loss of 29 u from the molecular ion, which is an ethyl radical, CHC3H2. This leaves the cation +CH3CH2CH-OH at m/z = 59. Therefore, the peak at m/z = 59 corresponds to the loss of an ethyl radical from M+ via α- cleavage. This can come only from the fragmentation for pentan-3-ol.
