Concept Introduction:
An ion is a charged species formed from an atom when an atom loses or gains electron. Ions are two types – cation and anion. Cation is positively charged ion as it is formed by loss of electron. Anion is negatively charged ion and electron rich as it is formed by gaining electron.
Ionic compounds are made of such oppositely charged ions held together by electrostatic force of attraction, which is termed as ionic bond.
A polyatomic ion is made up of more than one atom. It is an ion constitutes group of atoms and any one atom among them bears positive or negative charge. If the polyatomic ion has positive charge it is polyatomic cation and negative charge it is polyatomic anion.
Octet rule
Octet rule is rule of thumb which refers that atoms combine in such a way that their respective valence shells gets filled with eight electrons to attain more stability.
