Chapter 9.4, Problem 2C
Summary Introduction

To describe: The series of processes that link light absorption with ATP synthesis.

Concept introduction: Photophosphorylation is the process of photosynthesis where phosphorylation of ADP to form ATP occurs using the light energy of sunlight. In photophosphorylation, light energy generates a high-energy electron donor and a lower-energy electron accepter. Through electron transport chain, electrons are spontaneously transformed from donor to accepter. The electrochemical potential gradient energy from electron transport chain (ETC) helps to produce ATP that is a high energy molecule.

Define phototransduction.
Vitamin A (also known as retinol) is converted into retinal, an important molecule that can bind to the rhodopsin and capture light (photons). This conversion is done by a retinol dehydrogenase (see figure below). In patients that suffer from night blindness, very low level of retinal are detected. NAD+ NADH + H+ Retinol (Vitamin A) 4. What type of reaction is performed by the retinol dehydrogenase? Retinal A. It is a phosphorylation reaction in which retinol gains a phosphate group B. It is a dephosphorylation reaction in which retinol loses a phosphate group C. It is a redox reaction in which retinol is being oxidized D. It is a redox reaction in which retinol is being reduced E. It is a hydrolysis reaction in which a water molecule breaks down retinol
If plants described in problem 4 are illuminated by a combination of light of 680 nm and 700 nm, the oxygen production exceeds that of either wavelength alone. Explain.
