Solution:

The internal energy of the gases trapped in the cylinder will increase because of the upward motion of the piston.

Explanation of Solution

During the compression stroke of a diesel engine, the upward motion of the piston squeezes the gases in the cylinder into a much smaller volume. In the process, the piston does work on the system (gas). Work done on a system is positive and, as a result, increases the internal energy according to the first law of thermodynamics.

According to the first law of thermodynamics, work done on a system increases its internal energy.
