Chapter 9, Problem 8SGP

a.

Summary Introduction

To determine: The phenotypes of NN, Nn, and nn individuals in a genetic disorder caused by a recessive allele.

Introduction: Genes have alternate forms known as alleles which are transmitted to offspring. If the two alleles are different then there is a hybrid at F1 generation. The dominant allele out of the two alleles expresses itself and determines the phenotype. The condition caused due to recessive allele will show its effect only in the homozygous recessive genotype.

b.

Summary Introduction

To predict: The outcome of genetic cross between two Nn individuals and list the genotype and phenotype ratios.

Introduction: During gamete formation, each pair of alleles of one gene segregates into gametes independently of the pair of alleles of other gene. This is based on law of independent assortment of genes. These two genes separate and enter two different gametes independent of the other. After the genetic cross, the allele combinations are predicted which determine the possible genotypes of the offspring.

Transcription and Translation Practice: (Video 10-1 and 10-2) A. Below is the sense strand of a DNA gene. Using the sense strand, create the antisense DNA strand and label the 5' and 3' ends. B. Use the antisense strand that you create in part A as a template to create the mRNA transcript of the gene and label the 5' and 3' ends. C. Translate the mRNA you produced in part B into the polypeptide sequence making sure to follow all the rules of translation. 5'-AGCATGACTAATAGTTGTTGAGCTGTC-3' (sense strand) 4
What is the structure and function of Eukaryotic cells, including their organelles? How are Eukaryotic cells different than Prokaryotic cells, in terms of evolution which form of the cell might have came first? How do Eukaryotic cells become malignant (cancerous)?
