Concept Introduction:

An acid is a substance that gives H+ ions in its solution whereas a basic substance gives OH- ions in its solution. The reaction of an acid HA with a base BOH can be written as:

  HA + BOH BA +  H2O

Here BA stands for salt and the reaction named as neutralization reaction. Thus the reaction of an acid with a base results in the formation of salt and water. The salt is an ionic compound that is formed by the combination of the cation ( B+ ) from base and anion ( A- ) from acid and forms salt BA.
