Introduction

Mary Ainsworth, in the last 50 years, did a great deal of research on the bond between mother and child. She postulated that children with what she called healthy bonds were more likely to grow up to be happier, well-adjusted adults, while those who had less healthy bonds could suffer from psychological impairment later in life. While none of her theories have been proven and her work leaves out the bonds between the father and the child completely, there are many that take her ideas for gospel.
