One of the largest protein groups is the ATP binding cassette superfamily of proteins. P-glycoprotein, a member of this family acts as an efflux pump and works as a multidrug transporter to removes xenobiotics from the cytosol of the cell. These xenobiotics consist of cellular debris, toxins and helpful amphipathic drugs.
