The term glomerulus. Introduction : Kidney is a bean-shaped organ present in the abdominal cavity on both sides of the body. It is the central organ of the urinary system. The major function of kidneys is blood filtration. Other functions of kidneys include maintaining electrolyte concentration in the blood, acid base balance, fluid osmolarity, and volume of body fluids. The functioning unit of a kidney is the nephron. Glomerulus is a network of capillaries present at the initial region of a nephron. This network of capillaries is also known as tuft. Structurally, mesangium supports the tuft. Mesangium is the space present between blood vessels and has intraglomerular mesangial cells. Afferent arteriole is responsible for dumping blood in the glomerulus for filtration. The walls of capillaries present in glomerulus filters blood and releases soluble substances and water in the Bowman’s capsule. The capillaries then pass on the filtered blood into the efferent arteriole.
