Chapter 9, Problem 25P

Explorers in the jungle find an ancient monument in the shape of a large isosceles triangle as shown in Figure P9.25. The monument is made from tens of thousands of small stone blocks of density 3 800 kg/m3. The monument is 15.7 m high and 64.8 m wide at its base and is everywhere 3.60 m thick from front to back. Before the monument was built many years ago, all the stone blocks lay on the ground. How much work did laborers do on the blocks to put them in position while building the entire monument? Note: The gravitational potential energy of an object–Earth system is given by Ug = MgyCM, where M is the total mass of the object and yCM is the elevation of its center of mass above the chosen reference level.

Suppose you have an ice cream cone full of melted ice cream. The ice cream cone is in the shape of a right circular cone and is 0.5 feet tall with a width (diameter) of 0.25 feet at the top. You decide to drink the melted ice cream using a straw positioned at the top of the cone. How much work is necessary to drink all of the ice cream through the straw? Note that the approximate weight-density of melted ice cream is 64.05 pounds per cubic foot. Round your final answer to 3 decimal places.
An aquarium 12m long, 2m wide, and 7m deep is full of water. The density of water is 1000kg/m^3 and the force of gravity is 9.8m/s^2 a) Find the work needed to pump all of the water out of the aquarium.Work =  Joules. b) Find the work needed to pump half of the water out of the aquarium.Work =  Joules.
7. A cone of radius 6m and height 3m has volume 367 m³. A cone of radius 3m and height 12m has the same volume. Both cones are oriented so that the point is up. The cone of radius 6m is built out of chocolate of density 1325 kg/m³. The cone of radius 3 m is built out of marshmallow of density 500 kg/m³. Determine which takes more work to build by finding the work to build each. Be sure to include units.
