A hawser is wrapped two full turns around a capstan head. By exerting a 160-lb force on the free end of the hawser, a sailor can resist a force of 10,000 lb on the other end of the hawser. Determine (a) the coefficient of static friction between the hawser and the capstan, (b) the number of times the hawser should be wrapped around the capstan if a 40,000-lb force is to be resisted by the same 160-lb force.

1. If h = 600 mm, determine the magnitude of the force P (in N) required to move the cabinet to theright, if all the casters are locked. (ANSWER: 206)
2. If h = 600 mm, determine the magnitude of the force P (in N) required to move the cabinet to the right if the casters at B are locked and the casters at A are free to rotate. (ANSWER: 178)
Two blocks A and B weighing 3 kN and 15 kN, respectively, are held in position against an inclined plane by applying a horizontal force P as shown in Fig. Find the least value of P which will induce motion of the block A upwards. Angle of friction for all contact surfaces is 12°.7.
Determine the maximum allowable value of weight W at rest. Knowing that the coefficient of static friction between the wall and the block 1 is 0.2, the coefficient of static friction between the floor and block 2 is 0.30 and the coefficient of static friction between the blocks is 0.15
