Introduction:
The twelve pairs of ribs are part of the axial skeleton and articulate with all of the thoracic vertebrae. Mostly, ribs articulate with costal facets of two adjacent vertebrae: the inferior costal facet of the upper vertebra and the superior costal facet of the lower vertebra. The ribs form part of the thoracic cage along with the thoracic vertebrae and sternum. Typical features of most of the ribs are seen in ribs 2–7, and the other ribs are more or less atypical.
