Electron affinity:
In a gaseous state of an isolated neutral atom, energy released when an electron is introduced in outermost shell is known as electron affinity. It is the difference in energy between a neutral atom and its anion. Greater the negative value of electron affinity, the atom has more tendency to accept an electron.
Ionization energy:
In a gaseous state of an isolated neutral atom, the amount of energy required to eject an electron from outermost shell is known as ionization energy. Ionization energy increases from left to right across periods due to increase of effective nuclear charge. Ionization energy decreases down the group due to addition of electrons enters into new orbital which is far from nucleus.
