Chapter 8, Problem 8.14P

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The gas velocity at the centre of the duct for a pitot tube is to be calculated for a particular manometer reading.

Concept Introduction:

Pitot tube is a type of flow meter used to measure the local velocity of the fluid at a particular point. The formula for the velocity of a pitot tube is given as,

  u=pa-pbρ gas ..... (1)

pa − pb = Pressure drop due to manometer

  ρgas = Gas density

The pressure drop due to manometer is,

  pa-pb=ρwgh ..... (2)

The notations used here are,

g = Acceleration due to gravity

h = Manometer reading

  ρw = Density of water

The gas density is given as,

  ρgas=PMRT ..... (3)

P = Pressure of gas

T = Temperature of gas

R = Universal gas constant

M = Molecular weight of the gas

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The percent error in the maximum velocity calculated in the previous part is to be determined for changes in dependent parameter.

Concept Introduction:

The error is same for negative and positive sign so we can calculate only for the one sign.

% Error = FinalValue-InitialValueInitialValue×100 ..... (1)

The velocity varies with different factors as,

  uα(ρ)-12.......(2)uα(M)-12.......(3)uα(T)12.......(4)uα(P)12.......(5)

P is the pressure

8.3 Fractionation of a Protein Solution Four proteins are dissolved in solution. The constants in the Cohn equation (see Example 8.1) for the proteins are given in Table P8.3 along with the concentration of each protein in solution. Assume that the Cohn equation constants are valid when other proteins are present. (a) Determine the maximum percentage recovery of protein 4 that can be obtained if it is desired to obtain a precipitate containing 100% protein 4. (b) Determine the maximum percentage recovery of protein 3 that can be obtained if it is desired to obtain a mother liquor containing 99% protein 3.
