Chapter 8, Problem 1Q
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reason that leads to difficulty in the visualization of separation of cis-2-butene and trans-2-butene on thin layer chromatography plate should be explained.

Concept introduction:

Isomers (cis and trans) of but-2-ene have similar composition. The principle on which the thin layer chromatography works is that two different molecules interact differently with the mobile and stationary phase. Thus, it ends up getting separated. If two similar molecules or isomers are spotted on the plate, they might end up at the same distance from the base.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 1Q

Observing a separate spot of isomers of but-2-ene is difficult, because before they resolve into distinct spots, it evaporates.

Explanation of Solution

But-2-ene vaporizes too fast at room temperature due to very low boiling point. To obtain separate spots for the two isomers of but-2-ene , the sample mixture must move upward in the TLC column. But the mixture spot marked on the TLC plate evaporates. So, identifying and visualizing the two isomers separately becomes difficult.

The number of microstates corresponding to each macrostate is given by N. The dominant macrostate or configuration of a system is the macrostate with the greatest weight W. Are both statements correct?
For the single step reaction: A + B → 2C + 25 kJ If the activation energy for this reaction is 35.8 kJ, sketch an energy vs. reaction coordinate diagram for this reaction. Be sure to label the following on your diagram: each of the axes, reactant compounds and product compounds, enthalpy of reaction, activation energy of the forward reaction with the correct value, activation energy of the backwards reaction with the correct value and the transition state. In the same sketch you drew, after the addition of a homogeneous catalyst, show how it would change the graph. Label any new line "catalyst" and label any new activation energy.
