Chapter 8, Problem 1CP
Summary Introduction

To determine: The relationship between haploid and diploid chromosome numbers and meiosis and fertilization.

Introduction: The chromosome is the thread-like structure of the nucleic acids and protein molecules present in the nucleus of various living cells. The chromosome mainly contains the gene that bears the genetic information of one individual.

Explanation of Solution

The haploid cells are the cells that consist of a single chromosome set. The diploid cells are the cells that consist of two chromosome sets. Cell division is a process during which a single cell divides into two daughter cells. Mitosis occurs in somatic cells where the diploid number of the chromosome is maintained, whereas meiosis occurs exclusively in gametes. It is known as reductional division because the diploid condition of the cell gets reduced to haploid condition.

Meiosis is a type of cell division in which the chromosomal number is reduced by half, and it creates four haploid cells. Meiosis is necessary for the production of haploid cells for fertilization. During fertilization, haploid cells fuse to form a diploid zygote in which the chromosome number is restored. In plants, meiosis occurs during spore production in flowers or cones. Basically, meiosis counterbalances the fertilization effects by ensuring that the number of chromosomes remains constant from generation to generation.
